Softball Records Two Victories on Thursday; Improves To 8-2 On Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wayne State University softball squad (9-6 overall) won twice on Thursday to improve its spring break record to 8-2.  The Warriors defeated Slippery Rock (11-7 overall), 7-1, this morning then blanked California, Pa. (6-8 overall), 9-0 in six innings in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

Despite an early start (8:30 am), the Warrior bats were ready exploding for five runs in the bottom of the first.

Freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) was hit by a 1-2 offering with one out.  After a single by sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.), and a foul out which advanced both runners, junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) smacked her team leading third home run over the left-center field fence on a 1-0 pitch.

Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) worked the count full before getting a base hit, then classmate Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) singled on a 0-1 delivery.  Senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) singled on the first pitch to load the bases.  Sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had an RBI single to left plating Guitar with Messina scoring on an error.

After a leadoff home run in the top of the second by the Rock's Lauren Hawley, Wayne State responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Psenicka had a leadoff single, and after a ground out, scored on a double by freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).  McClounie greeted the relief pitcher with a single and Guitar plated Kressler with a single to make it 7-1.

Neither team scored in the final five innings.

Freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) earned her second consecutive victory (2-1) by allowing one earned run on eight hits with five strikeouts to two walks.

Brooke Dawson (4-5) was tagged with the loss after surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in 1.1 innings.  Paige Flore scattered six hits in her 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State snapped a scoreless tie with one run in the top of the third and five runs in the top of the fourth.

After each team left the bases loaded once in the first two innings, the Warriors scored first.  Turkalj had a leadoff single in the third, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kressler, then scored on a double by McClounie.

The following inning, Psenicka had a one-out single and Kressler walked with two outs.  McClounie walked following the pitching change to load the bases.  Guitar laced a two-run single to left center, then Messina was hit by a pitch to re-load the bases.  Adams had a two-run single to right, with Messina later scoring on a passed ball.

Despite it only being a six-inning game, WSU left 11 runners on base and the Vulcans left 10.
