Softball Wins Twice On Friday; Extends Winning Streak

Warrior offense accounts for 23 runs in two contests on Friday.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (11-6 overall) won twice on Friday to extend its winning streak to four games.  The Warriors had a 12-2 five-inning victory over Bloomsburg (6-6 overall) on Friday morning before posting an 11-6 triumph over Clarion (2-13 overall) on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU erupted for five runs in the top of the first against the Huskies.  Senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) walked to lead off the contest and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.).  Back-to-back singles by sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) and freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) made it 1-0.  Following a strikeout, junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) laced a single scoring Turkalj.  Junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) contributed an RBI single before senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) walked to load the bases.  Sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) drilled a two-run single increasing the Wayne State lead to 5-0.

The Warriors added four more runs in the top of the third on five hits.  Lucas, Kressler and junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) each had an RBI singl
e.

In the top of the fifth, WSU added three runs which included an RBI single by Kressler and a sacrifice fly by McClounie.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (6-3) allowed two earned runs on six hits during the five-inning contest.  She had one strikeout and two walks.

Abby Wild (3-2) pitched the first inning for Bloomsburg surrendering five earned runs on five hits with two walks to one strikeout.  Tara Baney hurled the next 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits.  Erin Smith retired two of the three batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Kressler had three hits and three RBI, while Turkalj and Adams each had two hits as WSU totaled 14 hits.

LEADING THE HUSKIES

Taylor Winkelman went 2-for-2 with a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP

In a high-scoring affair which saw three lead changes it was the Golden Eagles who scored three times in the top of the first on four hits.  Wayne State answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame.  Lucas singled and Psenicka doubled, before Turkalj's sacrifice fly put the Warriors on the board.  After Psenicka scored on a passed ball, Guitar had an RBI single.

WSU took its first lead with a pair of runs in the second.  Lucas had a one-out double and Psenicka singled.  Turkalj followed with an RBI single, while Psenicka scored on a Clarion miscue.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the top of the third with three runs on four hits, which included a two-run home run by Moriah Lynn that tied the contest at 5-5.

Barrett's double in the bottom of the third knotted the game at 6-6, following a single by Messina.

Wayne State snapped the 6-6 draw in the bottom of the sixth as Psenicka singled on an 0-2 delivery and Turkalj followed with a bunt single.  Psenicka scored the go-ahead run on a Clarion error and two batters later Guitar drilled a three-run double to left center.  Barrett completed the scoring with an RBI single.

IN THE CIRCLE

Wayne State used all three pitchers as freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) tossed the first inning allowing three earned runs.  Kressler allowed three runs (two earned) in her two innings of work.  Guitar earned her second win of the day by limiting Clarion to one hit and one walk with seven strikeouts over the final four innings.

Laura Sadowski (0-2) surrendered 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits in her five innings in the circle.  Rebecca Kelley pitched one inning.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka and Messina each had three hits, while Lucas, Turkalj, McClounie, Guitar and Barrett each contributed two hits as WSU pounded out 17 hits.

LEADING THE GOLDEN EAGLES

The top three batters in CU's order each had two hits - Natalie Else, Taylor Nonnenberg and Jessica Cartia.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will conclude its spring break trip with two games on Saturday.  The Warriors will battle 20th-ranked Southern New Hampshire (17-1 overall prior to its Friday games) at 9 a.m., followed by a 11:30 a.m. contest vs. Lock Haven (7-7 overall heading into Saturday).
