Softball Swept In GLIAC Opener

Warriors leave 19 runners on base in the two games.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (15-8 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) began conference play with a pair of home setbacks to visiting Tiffin University (14-11 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) Friday afternoon at Gary L. Bryce Field.  The Dragons won the opener 2-1 and the nightcap 4-0.

GAME ONE RECAP

Tiffin scored twice in the top of the fifth as Allyson Rock laced a two-out double to left center.  Libby Crow smacked the next pitch over the right field fence for a 2-0 Dragon lead.

The Warriors scored once in the bottom of the sixth as junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a one-out double to left center.  Back-to-back walks to junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) and Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) loaded the bases.  Senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) ripped the first pitch through the left side scoring McClounie.  However a WSU base runner was tagged out in a rundown and the next batter struck out.

Wayne State had a chance to tie in the seventh as freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a one-out single and sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) worked a five-pitch walk.  However a fly out and pop out ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (10-4) allowed two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts to zero walks.

Kimmy Reynolds (6-5) went the distance for Tiffin.  She allowed one earned run on six hits.  Reynolds struck out three and walked six.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka and Barrett each had two hits, but WSU left 10 runners on base.

LEADING THE DRAGONS

Crow had two hits and both RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP

Tiffin scored once in the top of the first on a two-out double by Brook Lambert and an RBI single up the middle by Sierra Besser-Paul.

TU extended its lead to 2-0 in the fourth on a pair of hits and two WSU throwing errors.

The Dragons scored two unearned runs in the seventh on two walks, two Warrior miscues and an RBI single by Chloe Swiasgood.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) went the distance allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits.  She struck out two and walked four.

Tiffany Snell (8-4) pitched the first 5.1 innings for the Dragons.  She blanked the Warriors on six hits with one strikeout to two walks.

Faith Bogard earned her first collegiate save after entering in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out.  A force out at home and a line drive to second ended the frame.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka was the lone Wayne State batter with a multiple-hit game.

LEADING THE DRAGONS

Five different TU batters had one hit.
