Softball Sweeps Davenport

WSU is 16-4 in its last 20 games.

DETROIT -- On head coach Gary Bryce's birthday, the Wayne State University softball team (17-8 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) swept a doubleheader from visiting Davenport University (19-10 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) winning game one 4-2, before recording an 8-0 triumph in six innings in the nightcap. The two wins improved Bryce's GLIAC regular-season win total to 499 (-191-2). The twinbill also increased his softball games coached at WSU to 1,999. In addition, Bryce coached 220 games for the Tartar women's basketball squad from 1983-1992.

Weather permitting on Friday, Bryce will become the fourth NCAA Softball Coach (in any division) to coach 2,000 games joining Michigan's Carol Hutchins (Ferris State - 1982, UM 1985-present), Margie Wright (Illinois State and Fresno State, 1980-2012) and Central Michigan's Margo Jonker (1980-present). Bryce's career softball record at WSU is 1,266-725-8.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an unearned run.

In the bottom of the third, freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a leadoff single after fouling off three consecutive 0-2 pitches. A wild pitch and a DU miscue advanced Myers to third. A ground ball off the bat of freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) went through the second baseman's legs allowing Myers to score the tying run. After a diving catch in left center by McKenzie Rowe, freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) laced a two-out double to right center scoring Psenicka with the go-ahead run. Junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

The Warriors added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth as junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a two-out double down the left field line and classmate Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had an RBI single to right.

Davenport scored once in the top of the seventh on a hit by pitch, a walk, a one-out single to load the bases and an RBI ground out.

GAME TWO RECAP

In her fifth career start, freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) retired 10 of DU's first 12 batters and was helped out by a 16-3 double play ball in the second following a nine-pitch walk to Griffin.

Wayne State tallied three runs in the bottom of the second. McClounie tripled to right field and scored on a two-out single by Messina. After a walk to senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington), sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) doubled in a pair of runs as the Panther left fielder was unable to make a diving catch.

The Warriors extended their lead in the third to 5-0. Sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) and Kressler had back-to-back one-out doubles to right center, and McClounie singled to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Messina singled in the hole at short scoring Kressler.

WSU ended the contest with a trio of runs in the sixth. Adams had a one-out single and pinch-runner Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) went to third on a double down the right field line by senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.). Turkalj had a two-run, two-out single down the left field line and Kressler singled up the middle plating Turkalj.
