Softball Splits Vs. PNW As Coach Bryce Reaches Two Historic Milestones

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (18-9 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) split a GLIAC doubleheader on Friday against visiting Purdue University Northwest (16-11 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) on an historical date for head coach Gary Bryce.

In the opener, Bryce became the fourth NCAA Softball coach in history (any division) to coach 2,000 games joining Michigan's Carol Hutchins (Ferris State - 1982, UM 1985-present), Margie Wright (Illinois State and Fresno State, 1980-2012) and Central Michigan's Margo Jonker (1980-present).  Bryce's career softball record at WSU is 1,267-726-8.

The Pride prevailed 11-10 in the opener, despite the host Warriors rallying from a 6-0 deficit in the third to knot the game at 8-8 in the fifth.

In the nightcap, Bryce earned his 500th GLIAC regular-season victory as WSU edged PNW 4-3.  His all-time GLIAC mark is 500-192-2.

GAME ONE RECAP

Purdue Northwest scored six times in the top of the third on one hit, five walks, two hit by pitches, two wild pitches and one WSU error.

The Warriors responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame as sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had an RBI single, as did freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).  With two outs, junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) smacked a three-run home run, her team-leading fifth four-bagger of the season.

The Pride extended their lead to 8-5 in the fourth.  Two walks, a hit by pitch, four wild pitches and a passed ball led to a pair of runs despite not getting a hit.

Once again, WSU pulled within a run as senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) had an RBI single in the fourth, while sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) contributed a sacrifice fly.

After holding PNW scoreless in the fifth, Wayne State tied the game in the fifth on an RBI ground out by junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.).

Purdue Northwest tallied three runs in the top of the seventh on two hits and three Warrior miscues.

WSU would not go down without a fight in the bottom of the seventh.  McClounie led off with a walk, and junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) followed with a walk.  After a fielder's choice, senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) drove in both runners with a double.  Two fielder's choices ended the contest.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar allowed seven runs (two earned) in three innings on three hits.  She struck out three and walked seven.  Freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) did not retire any of the three batters she faced with one walk and two hit by pitches.  Kressler (3-4) pitched the final four innings.  She allowed three unearned runs on four hits.  Kressler struck out three and walked two.

Samantha Burgard started for PNW and pitched the first four innings.  She surrendered seven earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout to two walks.  Holly Pagan (2-1) earned the win despite allowing three earned runs on four hits and two walks in three innings in the circle.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Lucas went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Adams, McClounie and Barrett each had two hits as WSU out-hit the Pride 11-7.

LEADING THE PRIDE

Kyleigh Payne went 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored.  Kalyn Learnard and Pagan each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP

Two of PNW's first four batters in the game scored, but Wayne State responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Kressler had an RBI ground out, while Turkalj scored on a wild pitch.  McClounie and Messina had back-to-back doubles to give WSU a 3-2 advantage.

The Warriors increased their lead to 4-2 in the second as freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had an infield single and a throwing error allowed Lucas to score.

Purdue Northwest pulled within a run in the top of the third on an RBI single by Tessa Steffens.

Neither team scored in the last four innings.

The defensive gem of the game came with two outs in the top of the fifth with the tying run at second base.  PNW's Samme Miller laced a 2-2 pitch into right center, but Lucas came up with a fantastic diving catch to preserve the lead.

IN THE CIRCLE

Buchanan (4-1) retired 12 of Purdue Northwest's final 14 batters to earn the complete game victory.  She allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts to one walk.
