Softball Swept By Grand Valley State, 6-1 and 4-1

Warriors to begin a 10-game road trip.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (18-11 overall, 3-5 GLIAC) lost both ends of a GLIAC doubleheader against No. 15-ranked Grand Valley State University (21-5 overall, 8-0 GLIAC) Monday at Gary L. Bryce Field.  GVSU won the opener 6-1, and completed the sweep with a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The visiting Lakers scored twice in the top of the third on a two-out, two-run single by Nikoma Holmen following an infield hit, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt.

GVSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the fifth on an RBI single by Taylor Rieger following a double by Kaylie Rhynard.

The Warriors scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore third baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) was hit by the first pitch.  After a pop out and fly out, pinch-runner Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) stole second and scored on a single by sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).

Grand Valley State answered with a pair of runs in the sixth.  Shannon Flaherty stole home as part of a double steal, while Brooke Henning scored an unearned run.

Rieger homered on an 0-2 offering leading off the seventh to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) fell to 11-5.  Guitar recorded five strikeouts to two walks, but allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits.

Allison Lipovsky improved to 10-2 by limiting WSU to one earned run and six hits.  She struck out eight and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Turkalj was the lone Wayne State batter with a multiple-hit game and she also drove in the only run.

LEADING THE LAKERS

Henning went 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Rieger had two hits and two RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP

GVSU took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by Rieger.

Wayne State evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had a leadoff single and went to second on a ground out.  Junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had an infield hit with Kressler scoring the tying run on a throwing error.

Henning had a two-run double in the top of the fifth following a pair of Warrior miscues.

The Lakers concluded the scoring as Teagan Shomin had an RBI single in the sixth.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) suffered the setback despite allowing just two earned runs (four total) on seven hits in seven innings.  She struck out one and walked four.

Allie Grys improved to 7-1 after holding WSU to four hits and one unearned run.  She struck out four and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Kressler had two of WSU's four hits and scored the only run.

LEADING THE LAKERS

Seven different GVSU batters had hits, with Rhynard scoring twice.

UP NEXT

WSU is slated to begin a 10-game road trip tomorrow at Northwood.  However, the status of the twinbill vs. the Timberwolves is still being confirmed.
