Softball Begins Road Stretch With Two Losses At Ashland

Warriors falter after leading 9-4 in opener; then fall 4-2 in game two.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University softball team (19-14 overall, 4-8 GLIAC) began a stretch of 16 road games in the next 20 contests by being swept at Ashland (13-11 overall, 3-3 GLIAC) in a league doubleheader on Tuesday.  The host Eagles scored six times in their final two at bats to claim game one by a 10-9 score.  AU won the nightcap 4-2.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors held a 9-4 lead with two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but two walks and back-to-back two-run singles knotted the game at 9-9.

In the bottom of the seventh, after the leadoff batter was retired, AU produced four consecutive singles for the win.

IN THE CIRCLE

Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in six innings of work.  She struck out three and walked five with four of the walks in the sixth coming around to score.

Freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) suffered the loss after allowing one run on four hits, while retiring one batter in the seventh.

Paige McMenemy started on the mound for Ashland and allowed eight runs (four earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings.  She struck out two and walked two.

Laney Jones (2-2) earned the win in relief as she limited WSU to one earned run on five hits in 2.2 innings.  She recorded one strikeout and one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) smacked two home runs, her team-leading sixth and seventh of the campaign, while driving in four runs.  Freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) tallied her second and third collegiate doubles.  Freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) and sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) each had two hits as part of WSU's 11-hit attack.

LEADING THE EAGLES

Katie Manahan and Erika Farst each had three hits, while four other AU batters had two-hit affairs.

GAME TWO RECAP

Ashland scored once in the first and again in the third with two hits in each inning.

The Warriors pulled within 2-1 in the fourth, as senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) worked a two-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double to left center by junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.).

The Eagles extended their with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth as two of AU's first three batters reached via an error.

WSU's final run came in the sixth on a single by Kressler, an Ashland miscue and a sacrifice fly by Lucas.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings of work.  She struck out one and walked two.

Hannah Stroe (4-5) notched the victory after holding WSU to two runs (one earned) on six hits in seven innings.  Stroe struck out three and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Adams was the lone WSU batter with two hits in the game.

LEADING THE EAGLES

Kylie Asmus went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Paige Summers was 3-for-3 with two RBI.  No other Ashland batter had a hit.
