DETROIT, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (13-10 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) closed out the regular season Sunday, defeating Lake Superior State (7-9 overall, 2-6 GLIAC) 8-1 at the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.
The match was Senior Day for the Warriors' lone four-year veteran,
Harvey Reed (Winchester, England. Reed went 2-0 on the day, pairing with sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) for a 8-3 win over Joe Gilman and Peter Summers before winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in a fifth flight singles contest against Diego Penz.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) won 8-3 over Ieuan Lister and Diego Penz in the first flight.
At No. 2, juniors
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) fell 8-4 to Jake Prime and Luis Valderrama. It was the Lakers' lone win in the match.
SINGLES RESULTS
The Warriors won all six singles matchups.
In the first flight, Westkamp defeated Gilman, 6-2, 6-3.
Karcz was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Jake Prime in the second flight.
Vane won 6-3, 6-3 over Valderrama in the third flight.
At No. 4, Mertz won 6-2, 6-4 over Lister.
In the sixth flight, Sammons was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Summers.
UP NEXT
Wayne State will compete in the GLIAC Championship beginning Friday at 6:45 p.m. The Warriors can finish as the second, third, or fourth seed pending the remainder of Sunday's results. WSU will receive a bye if it finishes in second, moving to Saturday's 3:45 p.m. second round events.
