MIDLAND, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (14-10 overall) earned a second-round win over Northwood at Saturday's GLIAC semifinal contest, winning 5-2 to claim a spot in Sunday's championship event.
DOUBLES RESULTS
The Warriors won two of the three doubles contests.
Juniors
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) won 8-3 in their second singles match against David Reinauer and Fancois Sauerman.
Senior
Harvey Reed (Winchester, England) and sophomore
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) were 8-5 winners over Brad Brandherm and Pablo Salamanca.
Sophomore Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and freshman
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) lost their first singles match to Mikhail Fomenkov and Kobus Sauerman.
SINGLES RESULTS
Wayne State won three of the four completed singles contests to claim the win.
Karcz, Mertz and Sammons were winners at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 resepctively. Karcz won 6-2, 6-1 over Kobus Sauerman, with Mertz taking a 6-2, 6-2 win over Francois Sauerman and Sammons winning 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the sixth flight over Salamanca.
Reed fell to Brandherm, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5. Westkamp (No. 1) and Vane (No. 3) did not complete their matches thanks to the clinch.
