Softball Swept To Begin Six-Game Road Trip

Warriors fall 5-3 and 4-3 at Ferris State.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Wayne State University softball team (20-17 overall, 5-11 GLIAC) began a six-game weekend road trip with a pair of losses at Ferris State University (10-24 overall, 4-14 GLIAC) on Friday.

GAME ONE RECAP

Wayne State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a leadoff single, went to second on a sacrifice by senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington), then scored on a single by Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).

The host Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.  FSU then added three runs in the fourth on a three-run one-out double by Emily Reed.

WSU pulled with two at 5-3, with a two-run top of the fifth.  Barrett had a leadoff home run, and senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) followed with a single.  After back-to-back fielder's choices, freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had an RBI double.

IN THE CIRCLE

Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) allowed five earned runs on 12 hits in six innings of work.  She struck out eight and walked four.

Abby Highway (6-6) earned the victory by holding the Warriors to three earned runs despite allowing 11 hits.  She recorded one strikeout and one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Kressler went 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, while Guitar had two hits.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS

Reed went 3-for-3 with three RBI, while four other FSU batters had two-hit games.

GAME TWO RECAP

For the second straight game, WSU scored first but was not able to turn it into a victory.  

Freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a one-out single in the top of the second and advanced to second on a single by junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.).  Guitar's single plated Myers.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead on back-to-back one-out singles.

The Warriors knotted the game at 2-2 in the fourth as Myers reached on an error, went to second on a single by Messina and scored on a base hit by Guitar.

WSU took a 3-2 advantage in the top of the seventh as Turkalj was hit by a two-out pitch and scored on a single and FSU miscue.

Once again Ferris State responded with tying run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out home run by Katie Scheuer.

FSU scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth on three singles in a four-batter stretch after the first batter was retired.

IN THE CIRCLE

Kressler (4-6) allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in 7.2 innings.  She struck out three and walked one.

Sam Bates (4-12) went the distance for FSU allowing three unearned runs on nine hits.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Messina went 3-for-4, while Guitar had two hits and an RBI.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS

Four different FSU batters had two hits in the game, with Scheuer driving in two runs.

Wayne State will continue its weekend road trip with a doubleheader at Davenport on Saturday.
