Men's Tennis Wins 5-3 Over Lewis in NCAA Tournament Opener

GREENWOOD, Ind. – The Wayne State University men's tennis team (15-11 overall) earned its first NCAA Tournament victory under head coach Bryan Morrow on Monday, winning 5-3 over Lewis (12-11 overall) in the regional opener at Center Grove High School near the UIndy campus.

Morrow, in his 10th season at the Warrior helm, was previously 0-3 in tournament contest.  He guided Wayne State to appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2014.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Wayne State won its matches at the second and third flights.

Juniors Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) won 8-4 over Anton Levitin and Andre Norasith, while senior Harvey Reed (Winchester, England) and sophomore Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) claimed an 8-5 triumph over Brendan Peterson and Chandler Stimpert.

At No. 1, sophomore Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) and freshman Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) fell 8-3 to Alan Braschinsky and Oskar Lusti.

SINGLES RESULTS
The Warriors won in the first, fourth and fifth flights to seal the match.

At No. 1, Westkamp won 6-3, 6-2 over Braschinsky.

In the fourth flight, Mertz was a winner over Peterson (6-4, 6-4).

Reed defeated Levitin in three sets (6-0, 3-6, 6-2) to claim the win.

Vane fell at No. 3 (6-4, 7-5) to Norasith, and Sammons was defeated by Stimpert (3-6, 6-0, 6-4) in the sixth flight.

Karcz, playing at No. 2, had split 1-1 with Lusti (4-6, 6-3) before the match was clinched.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will compete in the second round of regional play on Tuesday, facing off against site host UIndy.  The 10th-ranked Greyhounds (23-2) won 5-0 over Missouri-St. Louis on Monday.
