Dill's Six Shutout Innings Leads Baseball to Saturday Split

The Warriors dropped game one 5-0 before winning game two 5-0.

HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (13-14 overall, 4-7 GLIAC) split at Purdue Northwest (10-12 overall, 3-8 GLIAC) on Saturday, losing game one 5-0 before winning game two 5-0.  Ryan Kelley coached his 500th game as the Wayne State head coach during the first game of the doubleheader.

GAME ONE (L, 0-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Both pitchers dominated the first four innings as Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) (2-1) held the Pride to one hit, while WSU went hitless through its first 12 batters, striking out 11 times.  Purdue Northwest scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.

- JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) doubled to right field to break up Kyle Flessner's (1-2) no-hitter in the top of the seventh inning but WSU was unable to create any more offense as PNW evened the series at one win apiece.  Flessner finished with a 16 strikeouts.

ON THE MOUND
- Nelson pitched all six innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits and striking out four batters.

GAME TWO (W, 5-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- It did not take long for the Warriors to put the offensive struggles of game one behind them, scoring two runs on three hits.  A leadoff double from Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) was followed by a Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) single.  A walk to Conti loaded the bases and Ryan Mergener (Portage, Mich. / Portage Central) gave WSU a 2-0 lead with a two-run single into center field.

-  WSU scored three runs on three hits in the fourth inning beginning with a Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) triple into right field and Adams brought him home with a single to center.  Conti also drove in a run with an RBI single to right field later in the inning and a wild pitch allowed Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) to score, extending WSU's lead to 5-0.

AT THE PLATE
- Adams turned in his first career four-hit game, while Baldwin and Girard both collected two-hit games.

ON THE MOUND
- Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) (1-2) did not allow a run in his six innings of work and struck out four batters to earn his first win of the season.  Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) danced around a walk, a hit and a wild pitch in the seventh inning to seal the victory.

UP NEXT
- WSU will look tot ake the series on Sunday in the final game against Purdue Northwest, which is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. ET.
