Football Falls 35-29 In Overtime At Saginaw Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University football team (1-3 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) let a 15-point second half lead disappear and then had a chance to win on the final play of regulation but a blocked field goal sent the game into overtime, where the host Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals (4-0 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) blocked another field goal and then won 35-29 on a touchdown pass Saturday afternoon at Harvey Randall Wickes Stadium.

The Warriors took an early 7-0 lead late in the first quarter on a seven-yard touchdown scamper by junior DeOntay Moffett (Muskegon Hts., Mich. / Mona Shores).  SVSU answered late in the opening stanza on a four-yard touchdown run by Nate McCrary.

Paul Graham (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) connected on his first of two field goals midway through the second period for a 10-7 WSU advantage.  Just before intermission junior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) hauled in a 29-yard touchdown pass from Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) pushing the Warrior lead to 17-7.

Early in the third quarter, senior middle linebacker Anthony Pittman (Birmingham, Mich. / Groves) tackled Jermaih Johnson in the end zone for a safety.

That would be WSU's last points until the final two minutes of regulation as Saginaw Valley garnered 22 consecutive points for a 29-22 lead.

Moffett's two-yard touchdown run with 1:55 remaining followed by Graham's PAT knotted the game at 29-29.

Freshman linebacker Brandon Tuck-Hayden (Akron, Ohio / Buchtel) forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff which was recovered by Samson Tai (Newark, Calif. / Newark Memorial) at the SVSU 33.

Five straight running plays by the Warriors netted 18 yards leading to Graham's 32-yard field goal attempt on the final play of regulation which was blocked by David Still.

In overtime, WSU accumulated seven yards on three carries before Still blocked Graham's 34-yard field goal attempt.

On SVSU's possession, after a rush for no gain, Ryan Conklin completed a 25-yard scoring pass to Chad Gailliard.

TEAM STATS

Wayne State led 202 to 150 in rushing yards, 245 to 145 in passing yards and 447 to 295 in total offense, however three interceptions and two blocked field goals led to the setback.  WSU had a 36:04 to 23:56 edge in time of possession.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Senior Demetrius Stinson (Detroit, Mich. / Douglass) rushed for a game-high 122 yards, while Moffett added 51 yards on the ground, and junior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville) contributed 49 rushing yards.  AmRhein completed 18-of-34 passes for 245 yards and one touchdown.  Hill led all nine WSU receivers with four catches, while Roberson had a game-best 68 receiving yards, all in the first half.

LEADING THE CARDINALS

WSU NOTES

When Anthony Pittman tackled SVSU running back Jermaih Johnson for a safety early in the third quarter, it was WSU's first safety since Brandon Lee and Derrick Rodgers combined to tackle Michigan Tech's Kevin Miller for a two-yard loss on a reception in Houghton on Sept. 3, 2015.

Roberson finished with 196 all-purpose yards (120 on kickoff returns, 68 receiving yards, and eight yards on a punt return).  It marked the second consecutive contest Roberson has totaled at least 195 all-purpose yards as he garnered 197 the week before against Ashland.  With his TD catch just before intermission, Roberson has four TD receptions in 2018, and had five touchdown catches in the first four games of 2017.  He moved into a tie-for-ninth in school history with Elbert Richmond (1950-52) at 11 career touchdown receptions.

The Warriors have started 1-3 for the first time since 2007, when WSU lost at home to Michigan Tech (21-14), won at St. Joseph's (42-19), lost in triple overtime at Mercyhurst (58-50), and lost in overtime at home to Findlay (35-28).

WSU played its second overtime contest in the last five games after ending 2017 with a 34-27 extra session victory at Davenport.  Wayne State is 4-9 in overtime games and 3-4 in road overtime contests.  This was the first extra period game between WSU and SVSU.
