Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Michigan Tech

The Warriors led 2-0 but were unable to close out the Huskies.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (9-7 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) hosted Michigan Tech (13-3 overall, 7-1 GLIAC) on Friday night and the Warriors were unable to close out the Huskies after leading 2-0 and MTU would come back and win 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Michigan Tech led the first set 7-4 after a WSU attack error but Wayne State led 11-9 after a kill from Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) and a MTU attacking error.  A point from Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) gave the home team a 15-12 lead.  The Huskies led 18-17 later in the set but the Green & Gold won eight of the final nine points to take the opening set, 25-19.

The Warriors trailed 6-2 to start the second set but a 4-0 rally by the Warriors later in the game put WSU on top 10-9.  The run was capped by a combo block from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron).  Richardson continued to have the hot hand with another point to give the Warriors a 15-12 advantage.  Kills from Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II), Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Frazee stretched the margin to seven, 21-15.  MTU trimmed the deficit to one at 22-21 and 24-23 but a kill from Richardson gave WSU a 2-0 match lead.

WSU led the third set 5-3 and eventually 13-10 after a kill from Fike.  The Warriors continued to control the set and led 19-16 after a point from Richardson.  However, the Huskies led 22-20 but kills from Richardson and Malewicz tied the game at 22-22.  Michigan Tech won the next two points before Richardson kept WSU alive with a point.  MTU won the final point to avoid the sweep, 25-23.

The Huskies began the fourth set with a 6-2 lead and controlled the entire set.  The deficit grew to 11-4 before WSU began to find its footing.  Kills from Richardson and Krenz started a 4-0 rally as WSU cut the visitors lead to 13-10.  MTU responded and led 18-12 before going on to win 25-21 and forcing a fifth set.

Fike staked Wayne State to a 4-1 lead with a kill but a 9-0 run by the Huskies gave MTU a 14-6 lead as it would win 15-7 and take the match 3-2.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson led WSU with 23 kills, hitting .313 on 64 total attacks.  She also totaled 21 digs.  Malewicz chipped in 16 kills, while Fike collected 12.  Duffield matched her season-high with 56 assists.  Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) anchored the defense with 23 digs, while Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) finished with 13 digs.

RICHARDSON'S MILESTONE
Richardson surpassed the 1,000-kill mark for her career (1,010) on Friday night.  Earlier in the season, she collected her 1,000th dig (1,060) and becomes a member of the exclusive 1,000-kill and 1,000 dig club.
