Football Upended by Second-Ranked Ferris State

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University football team (3-3 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) suffered a Homecoming loss, 59-13, to second-ranked Ferris State University (6-0 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) before the largest crowd (7,092) in Adams Field history Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

WSU garnered one first down on its opening possession, but a short punt gave the Bulldogs the ball at midfield.  The Warrior defense forced a fumble on FSU signal caller Jayru Campbell inside the WSU 10 yard line, with senior cornerback Greg McDade (Sterling heights, Mich. / Stevenson) recovering for Wayne State.  It was the first of four lost fumbles by Ferris State.

After a three-and-out by the Warriors, the Bulldogs went 44 yards in two plays which began with a 38-yard completion from Campbell to Sy Barnett, followed by a six-yard touchdown run by Campbell.

WSU recorded a first down on a 31-yard reception by graduate student Deiontae Nicholas (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) but a four-yard punt, gave FSU the ball at its own 43.  The Bulldogs went 57 yards in five plays with Campbell and Barnett connecting for 46 yards to make it 14-0.

Ferris State completed the opening stanza scoring on s 36-yard TD pass from Campbell to Barnett on the final play of the quarter.

Campbell had a 16-yard touchdown run and threw a six-yard scoring toss to Lazon Hicks for the only scoring of the second period.

FSU's Tyler Minor scored on a three-yard jaunt to cap a 10-play, 65-yard drive following the second half kickoff.

Following a Wayne State punt, an FSU drive into the red zone was thwarted as senior linebacker Leon Eggleston (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview) returned a Bulldog fumble 45 yards to the FSU 30.  It was the second-longest non-scoring fumble return in school history behind the 60-yard fumble return by Martin Weisberg vs. Alma on Sept. 27, 1919.

Two penalties on Ferris State moved the ball to the FSU 8, where junior Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.) tossed an eight-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Nick Poterack (Byron Center, Mich.) to get the Warriors on the scoreboard.  It was AmRhein's first touchdown pass of the season, and Poterack second touchdown reception of his career.

Ferris State scored on a nine-yard run by Jeremy Burrell to make it 49-6 after 45 minutes.

FSU's Jackson Dieterle connected on a 24-yard field goal early in the final stanza.

The Bulldogs muffed a Warrior punt by senior cornerback Myron Riley-Brown (Harvey, Ill. / Thornton) recovering the ball at the FSU 21.

On a third-and-10, AmRhein connected with junior tight end Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.) for a 21-yard touchdown pass.  It was Glenn's second TD reception of the season and the fourth of his career.

A late TD by FSU quarterback Evan Cummins completed the scoring.
