MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (8-9 overall, 3-6 GLIAC) played the second of two matches in the U.P. on Saturday evening at Northern Michigan (7-10 overall, 4-5 GLIAC) and the Warriors fell in three sets for the second time in the last two matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats won the first five points of the opening set and the home margin grew to 16-5. The Warriors stormed back to trim the deficit to 18-14 following five straight NMU attacking errors. A point from
Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) made it 22-17 in favor of NMU but the home team would go on to win 25-17 and take a 1-0 match lead.
Northern Michigan led 7-4 to start the second set.Â
Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) posted a kill to bring the Green & Gold within two at 10-8 and Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central)
kept WSU close at 14-11 with a kill of her own. However, a 9-1 NMU run later in the set made it 24-13 and the Wildcats would win 25-14.
NMU led 5-1 to start the third set but a 4-0 run by WSU gave the visitors a 7-6 advantage. The rally was powered by a block from Wagner and
Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) plus a kill from Wagner. The lead grew to 13-8 after a service ace from Shell. The Wildcats would claw back and take a 16-15 lead and eventually held onto a 21-17 advantage. Northern Michigan completed the sweep with a 25-21 set-three victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Krenz paced the offensive attack with nine kills, whileÂ
Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) finished with 23 assists. Both Wagner and Duffield tallied seven digs.
