Volleyball Splits Day One at Midwest Regional Crossover

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (9-10 overall) started play at the 12th Annual Midwest Regional Crossover on Friday with a pair of matches.  The Warriors fell in five exciting sets to William Jewell (8-12 overall) in the morning matchup and then bested Ohio Dominican (2-18 overall) in the evening contest in four sets.

The two-day tournament features 63 matches conducted on 11 courts throughout six sessions at one of the top volleyball facilities in the country, The Academy Volleyball Club.  The event is designed to increase competition between teams from the three leagues in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region.

MATCH ONE vs. WILLIAM JEWELL (L, 2-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Wayne State led the opening set 4-0 and 8-2 following a kill from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore).  WSU continued to control the tempo and led 15-5 after a 4-0 run powered by two points from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.).  Another kill from VanderWal made it 20-12 later in the game and the Warriors would go onto win 25-20, holding off a late Cardinals comeback attempt.

Once again the Green & Gold started fast, leading 6-3 in the second set.  Points by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) and Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) pushed WSU's lead to 12-8 before the team traded points until WJC tied the set at 17-17.  The Cards led 22-19 and 23-20 before four straight Wayne State points, including two kills from Krenz, gave the Warriors a 24-23 lead.  The thrilling set would continue to go back-and-forth, being tied at 25-25, 26-26, 27-27 and 28-28.  Wayne State looked poised to finish off the set, leading 32-21 but WJC broke serve and took a 34-33 advantage.  The Cardinals won the final two points to win 36-34 and finally complete the marathon second set.

William Jewell led 9-5 in the third set but a 5-1 run by WSU trimmed the deficit to 12-11.  Krenz has two kills during the rally while VanderWal, Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) and Wagner also tallied points.  The game was tied at 17-17 but WJC won the next two points, taking a 19-17 lead.  Wayne State won the race to 20 and led 20-19 and 23-20 after back-to-back kills by Krenz.  Krenz carried the Warriors down the stretch with the last four kills to give Wayne State a 25-21 set victory and a 2-1 match lead.

Wagner put WSU on top 6-3 with a kill early in the fourth set.  The evenly-matched teams traded punches midway through the set but the Green & Gold used a 6-0 run to take a 19-14 lead.  Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) used two service aces to power the rally.  WSU led 22-20 after a point from VanderWal and eventually had a 24-23 advantage.  However, WJC tied the set at 25-25 before a Cardinals error gave the Warriors a 26-25 lead.  Back-to-back WSU errors allowed William Jewell to take the set 28-26 and force a fifth set.

It was more of the same in the final set as the teams were unable to create much breathing room from each other.  Wayne State led 5-3 early and 9-8 following a kill by Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) and a WJC attacking error.  The Warriors were two points away from winning the match and led 13-12 after kills from VanderWal and Fike.  After WJC took a 14-13 lead. WSU answered by winning three of four rallies, taking a 16-15 advantage.  Unfortunately, the Cards won four of the final five points to win 19-17 and take the match 3-2.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Krenz finished with 30 kills on 53 swings to post a .472 hitting percentage.  The 30 kills are the most since Hailey Richardson had 29 on Sept. 1, 2018 and fell two shy of Rachel Parham's 32 in 1986. against Wright State.  VanderWal finished with a career-best 21 kills, while Wagner posted 20 kills.  Duffield dished out a career-high 71 assists, the most since Cydney Biessel's 61 in 2010 versus Findlay.  Wagner also led the defense with 24 digs, while Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) finished with 21.

Both the 30 kills and 71 assists are rally-scoring era (since 1999) records.

MATCH TWO vs. OHIO DOMINICAN (W, 3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors started fast and led 7-2 in the opening set.  Ohio Dominican hung around and trailed 13-11 but WSU responded and extended its lead to 18-12.  A kill from Summer Farris (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) gave the Green & Gold a 22-15 advantage and an ODU attacking error later in the set gave WSU a 25-18 win.

Kills from Fike and Wagner plus an ace by Wagner powered Wayne State to a 6-5 lead in the second set.  The Panthers led 13-12 but the Warriors would rebound and take an 18-15 lead after a point from VanderWal.  Ohio Dominican used a 6-0 run to take a 22-19 advantage.  Wagner notched a kill to trim ODU's lead to 24-23 but the Panthers won the next point to tie the match at 1-1.

The third set was tied at 10-10 but Wayne State ended the game on a 15-3 rally to win 25-13.  Krenz and Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) connected on a pair of kills for points 24 and 25 to win the set 25-13.

The Panthers led set number four 4-2 but two kills from VanderWal pushed WSU in front 10-8.  Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) entered off the bench and delivered two service aces and gave Wayne State a 14-10 advantage.  The Green & Gold continued to lead 19-14 and kills from Krenz, Breault and Fike sealed the 25-19 win and a 3-1 match triumph.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Krenz led the offensive attack once again with 13 kills, while Duffield tallied 22 assists.  Breault finished with 15 helpers.  Benoit anchored the defense with 15 digs.
