Football Wins Third Straight

Defense holds Wildcats to 183 yards.

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Wayne State University football team (3-2 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) won its third straight contest claiming a 27-14 victory at Northern Michigan University (1-4 overall, 0-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the Warrior defense forced a three-and-out on the opening drive, Wildcat Brady Hanson returned an interception 38 yards to the WSU 14.  Three plays later Tyshon King rushed in from four yards out to give the hosts a 7-0 advantage.

WSU answered back with an 18-play drive that covered 75 yards in 9:54.  Wayne State converted two fourth-down plays and tied the game at 7-7 on a four-yard touchdown reception by senior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores).  Junior tight end Steven Glenn (Lincoln Park, Mich.) had a 14-yard reception on second-and-17 to help keep the drive alive.

The tie score lasted all of 14 seconds as Tyauan Cox returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown.  Daniel Riser's PAT increased the Wildcat lead to 14-7.

The Warriors then drove 90 yards in just six plays with sophomore King Sanders (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodridge) scoring on a 45-yard run.  Niccolo Seilo (Royal Oak, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) made the PAT kick to knot the game at 14.

After an NMU punt, the teams traded turnovers (WSU – interception; NMU lost fumble).  Senior Leon Eggleston (Sylvania, Ohio / Southview) had a three-yard fumble return to the WSU 11.  Wayne State drove 89 yards, this time in eight plays with Roberson, Jr. hauling in his second TD catch of the contest.  Roberson's 17th career touchdown reception was from 24 yards on a second-and-eight.

The only points of the third period was a 34-yard field goal by Seilo as WSU took the second half kickoff and drove 58 yards and used nearly four minutes off the clock.

WSU drove into the red zone in the fourth quarter but an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on WSU was followed by a missed field goal.

With 3:24 left in the fourth quarter, Seilo connected on a 29-yard field goal to increase Wayne State's lead to 27-14.
