Men's Basketball Holds On For 69-64 Win at Lake Erie

Neely and Gordon combine for 43 points.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (1-1 overall) met Lake Erie (0-2 overall) on Sunday afternoon and the Warriors held on to win 69-64, powered by 26 points from senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).  This contest and Friday's home opener vs. Ohio Dominican were part of the GLIAC/G-MAC Challenge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State started the game on a 11-0 run, including five points from senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).  Back-to-back steals from Neely led to fast break layups and pushed the visitor's advantage to 15-0 at the 13:57 mark.  The run reached 17-0 after a bucket from freshman Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) with 12:27 left to play.  The Storm began to find their rhythm and trimmed the deficit to 19-8 at the 11-minute mark.  The Warriors saw their lead shrink to 21-14 with 7:27 remaining in the first half.  James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Cicago Simeon) connected for 11 straight points to keep the Green & Gold ahead 35-22 at the 1:44 mark.  At halftime, the Warriors held onto a 39-29 lead powered by 16 points from Neely.

Neely continued to have the hot hand and knocked down a triple to extend WSU's lead to 44-29 at the 17-minute mark.  Another deep jumper from Neely increased the Warriors lead to 49-31 at the 13:33 mark.  Four straight points by senior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave WSU a 53-36 advantage with 11:25 remaining.  The Storm continued to chip away and trailed 55-44 at the 8:53 mark, forcing head coach David Greer to use a timeout.  Gabe Kynard and Harrison Riggs connected from behind the arc to pull Lake Erie within five, 55-50, at the 7:23 mark.  Two free throws by Kynard cut the deficit to 55-52 with 6:33 left in regulation.  WSU's lead was one, 57-56, after a turnover produced an uncontested layup for Kynard.

A triple by Gordon regained the lead for WSU (60-58) after a go-ahead bucket by LEC's Jacob Plantz.  After another Plantz hoop tied the game at 60-60, Gordon drained a three-pointer at the 1:49 mark to give the Warriors the lead for good.  Both sophomore Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and Neely went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to extend the lead to 67-62.  Marshall then sealed the win with two free throws with 10 seconds remaining.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely totaled 26 points, along with team-high totals of six assists and five steals.  Gordon chipped in with 17 points, while Marshall added 12 points.  Murray had a team-high 10 rebounds.

LEADING THE STORM
Kynard tallied a team-best 16 points, with Kevin Peterson contributing 12 points off the bench.  Damion Williams grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

ONE BIG THING
After missing key free throws in Friday's setback to Ohio Dominican, WSU went 6-for-7 from the foul line in the final minute of the win at Lake Erie.
