Women's Basketball Edges Central State in Home Opener

Head coach Carrie Lohr tallied her 300th collegiate win.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (2-1 overall) notched a 78-70 victory over Central State (1-2 overall) in the home opener on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors trailed the first 6:30, before a layup by sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) tied the game at 14-14.  CSU responded with a triple, but the Green and Gold would go on a 13-point run that carried into the second stanza, to lead by 10 (27-17) with 8:46 left on the clock.  George, sophomore guard Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) and classmate Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) tallied at least four points each during that time.

After WSU's run, the Marauders tallied two points from the charity stripe.  Senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) was next to score, draining a shot from beyond the arc.  A Central State turnover allowed Sherwood to make the next basket at 7:36 to extend the WSU lead to 13 points, the largest of the game at 32-19.  Over the next three minutes, the Warriors only recorded two free throws while allowing six CSU points.  Both teams would score 10 points over the final 4:24 of the first half, to give WSU a 44-35 lead at intermission.

Wayne State was outscored 8-2 in the first 1:34 of the third period.  Both teams would have a scoring drought the next 3:30 before two points from the foul line by sophomore forward Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington).  After back and forth play, the Marauders tied the game 55-55 with 42 seconds left.  Johnson topped the third quarter off with a triple to regain the Green and Gold lead.

At the start of the fourth period, CSU immediately responded with a three-point shot to tie the game once again.  There would be five lead changes within 1:49, before Wayne State outscored the Marauders 12-5 over the remaining 5:51 of the game.  Head coach Carrie Lohr recorded her 300th collegiate victory following the 78-70 win vs. Central State.
