Men's Basketball Battles to Victory at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (3-1 overall) won its third straight game 65-60 at Hillsdale (3-4 overall) on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) cut Hillsdale's lead to 5-4 with a layup at the 16:06 mark before graduate student James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) knocked down a triple to give WSU a 7-5 advantage with 15:27 to play in the first half.  The Warriors continued to lead 11-10 after a jumper from Gordon at the 10:50 mark.  Two free throws by senior Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) with 8:49 remaining pushed the visitor's lead to 15-11.  The Chargers used a 5-0 run to take a 16-15 advantage at the 6:58 mark.  However, back-to-back buckets from Murray put WSU on top by three, 19-16, on the next two possessions.  After a HC triple tied the game, a dunk from freshman Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance), who was making his first career start, gave the Green & Gold a 21-19 lead with 4:46 left before halftime.  The teams traded punches in the final minutes of the opening stanza but Wayne State always had an answer, including two points from Neely at the 1:44 mark to put WSU on top 27-25.  Gordon connected from behind the arc for his second three-pointer of the night, pushing WSU's halftime lead to 32-27.

The Wayne State lead hovered around three during the opening minutes of the second half but consecutive triples from Hillsdale tied the game at 36-36 at the 16:27 mark.  Freshman Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) found room underneath the hoop for a layup, putting the Warriors back on top 38-36 and Neely followed with a 12-foot jumper, making it 40-36 with 15:27 remaining.  Another trey from Gordon gave WSU its largest lead of the night at 43-36 at the 14:46 mark.  The Chargers erased that seven-point lead in a hurry, tying the game at 45-45 with 11:57 left in regulation.  Baskets from Talbot and Murray gave the Green & Gold a 49-45 lead at the 10-minute mark.  A layup by Murray at with eight minutes left to play kept the Warriors in the lead, 53-49.  A three-point play by HC's Patrick Cartier brought the Chargers within one, 53-52, at the 6:54 mark.  However, Murray continued to carry the WSU offense with a layup on the other end, giving Wayne State a 55-52 advantage with 6:20 remaining.  Davis Larson cut WSU's lead to one, 57-56, with a layup at the 3:53 mark.  An offensive rebound by Grant led to a jumper by Gordon to give the Warriors a 59-56 advantage at the 1:24 mark.  Following a Hillsdale timeout, a contested jumper by Dylan Lowry cut WSU's deficit to 59-58.  Neely made both ends of a one-and-one to return the margin to three, 61-58, with 50 seconds to play.  The WSU defense stood tall on the ensuing possession and a HC foul produced two successful free throw attempts by Murray, which pushed the margin to 63-58 at the 28-second mark.  A triple from Connor Hill trimmed the home deficit to 63-60 with 18 seconds left to play.  Another one-and-one at the charity stripe by Neely gave the Warriors a 65-60 lead.  That would be the final score as two missed free throws by WSU.
