Women's Basketball Falls At Fourth-Ranked Ashland

Chambers and Johnson combine for 33 points.

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (6-3 overall, 1-2 GLIAC) concluded 2019 GLIAC play with a 79-54 setback at fourth-ranked Ashland University (8-0 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The contest was back-and-forth for the first eight minutes, with Wayne State taking a 15-14 lead with 2:13 remaining in the opening stanza as sophomore Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored.  George had given the Warriors a 2-0 lead and senior Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) had scored moments earlier giving WSU a 13-12 advantage.

The Eagles scored the next five points until Sadia Johnson connected from long range with 14 seconds left in the first quarter to pull Wayne State within one (19-18) after 10 minutes.

A jumper by junior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) on the opening possession of the second period put WSU ahead 20-19.  A conventional three-point play by AU's Jodi Johnson ignited an 11-0 run by the hosts as the Warriors went almost seven minutes without scoring until George's lay-up with just under three minutes remaining until intermission.  The Eagles tallied nine of the final 14 points before halftime to lead 39-27 after 20 minutes.

Wayne State had a solid third quarter out-scoring Ashland 21-17 to pull within eight (56-48) heading into the fourth period.

A triple by George in the first minute of the final stanza cut the Warrior deficit to nine (60-51), but the Eagles responded with a 12-0 run as WSU was held scoreless for over 5:30.  Junior Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) had an offensive rebound and put-back to end the drought.
