Women's Hoops Falls 78-50 to 15th-ranked Grand Valley State

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (10-10 overall, 5-7 GLIAC) lost 78-50 to 15th-ranked Grand Valley State (18-2 overall, 11-1 GLIAC) at the Matthaei on Friday evening.

In a back-and-forth start to the contest, including six lead changes in the first period, freshman Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) tallied the first three points for the Warriors.  WSU remained in the lead until the 6:17 mark, when GVSU's Maddie Dailey scored from beyond the arc to put the Lakers in front 5-3.  Senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) responded with a layup to tie the score.  There would be four lead changes over the next 1:30.  Williams made two free throws before a two-minute scoring drought for Wayne State.  With 2:24 on the clock, junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) connected from three-point range to give the Warriors a 14-13 lead.  Freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) scored the final WSU point of the quarter from the charity stripe with 2:03 left.  The Green and Gold trailed 18-15 at the end of the first stanza.

Following Miller's free throw in the first quarter, Wayne State went over five minutes without scoring a point and over 8:30 without tallying a field goal.  GVSU recorded the first 10 points of the second quarter before Williams scored two points from the foul line prior to a three-minute scoring drought for the Warriors.  During that time, the Lakers tallied six points for a 34-17 advantage.  Freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) was the next to score, with a layup at the 3:51 mark.  WSU was outscored 6-5 in the final 3:06 of the stanza to trail 40-24 at halftime.

Sherwood tallied the first two points of the third period from the charity stripe.  During a 4:30 scoring drought for Wayne State, Grand Valley scored 11 points to lead 51-26.  Senior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) made a layup at the 5:10 mark before GVSU recorded another six points.  Over the next 2:13, the Warriors were outscored 11-2 to fall behind 62-30 with just under three minutes left in the quarter.  WSU tallied the final 10 points of the third quarter, which included triples by juniors Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic), Lyndsey Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) and Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) to pull within 62-40 after 30 minutes.

The Green and Gold scored eight of the 12 points in the first 5:45 of the fourth period to cut its deficit to 18 at 66-48.  After Villemure's bucket at the 4:15 mark, the Lakers went on a12-0 run.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 29 percent (16-of-56) from the floor, while Grand Valley connected on 50 percent (28-of-56) of its field-goal attempts.  WSU went 12-of-14 (86 percent) from the charity stripe, while GVSU was 16-of-18 (89 percent) in three-point attempts.  Both teams made six triples as the Lakers were 6-of-15 (40 percent) compared to 6-of-25 (24 percent) for the Warriors.  WSU had a 27-15 edge in bench points, while GVSU led 16-4 in points off turnovers.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Williams nearly had a double-double with team-high totals of 10 points and nine rebounds.  Sherwood and Villemure each scored eight points, while Cherney blocked a team-best three shots.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Cassidy Boensch had a double-double with game-high totals of 21 points and 16 rebounds.  Taya Andrews (13), Jenn DeBoer (12), Dailey (10), Natalie Koenig (10) and Victoria Hedemark (10) also scored in double-digits.  DeBoer contributed a game-best five assists.
