Softball Blanks Molloy 6-0 To Conclude NFCA Leadoff Classic

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Wayne State University softball team (3-2 overall) concluded the 2019 NFCA Leadoff Classic with a 6-0 victory over Molloy (1-4 overall) on Sunday morning.

GAME RECAP

WSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a two-out single and stole second.  She scored the game's first run on a ground-rule double by junior Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.).

The Warriors increased their advantage to 2-0 in the third as senior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a leadoff single and scored as sophomore Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) doubled to right center.

Wayne State added three runs in the top of the sixth.  Guitar had a one-out double, moved to third on an infield single by Clayton, then scored as freshman Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) reached on an error.  Following a fielder's choice, McClounie tripled to right center to plate two more runs.

In the seventh, junior Kelsey Ramus (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) had a one-out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Ramus moved to third on a ground out and scored on an infield single by Guitar.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) earned her first collegiate victory by blanking the Lions on four hits in her four innings of work.  She struck out two and walked one.  Guitar notched her first save of the season by retiring all nine batters she faced, including two on strikes.

Molloy employed three hurlers with starter Courtney Greene (0-2) being tagged with the loss.  She allowed five earned runs on 11 hits in 5.2 innings.  Tonianne Larson allowed one earned run on three hits in her inning of work.  Jenna Turato recorded the final out in the top of the seventh.  Each of the three Lion pitchers recorded one strikeout with zero walks.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Guitar went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Clayton went 3-for-4.  Daly contributed two hits with McClounie adding two hits and two RBI as part of WSU's 14-hit attack.

Alex Burns had two of Molloy's four hits.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will compete in the Lewis Flyers D-2 Midwest Region Dome Invitational on Feb. 22-23-24.  The Warriors will play William Jewell and Winona State on Friday before facing Illinois-Springfield and Lewis on Saturday.  WSU will concluded the tournament with a Sunday contest against Missouri S&T.
