Softball Wins Twice on Day One of Dome Invitational

WSU edges William Jewell, then blanks Winona State.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Wayne State University softball team (5-2 overall) recorded two victories on the opening day of the 2019 Dome Invitational being hosted by Lewis University.

The Warriors won the opener 6-3 against William Jewell (2-4 overall) and then blanked 15th-ranked Winona State (2-2 overall) 4-0 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU took a 2-0 lead just three batters into the bottom of the first.  Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single and senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) followed with a bunt single.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) then laced a 1-2 offering into right center for a two-run triple.

Wayne State added to its lead in the second as freshman left fielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) had a one-out single and McClounie walked with two outs.  Kressler smashed a 2-0 pitch into right center for a two-run double.

The Warriors extended their lead to 5-0 in the third.  Senior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had a leadoff single.  Pinch-runner Alexis Abruzzo (Sugar Grove, Ill.) went to second on a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a fly out.  Junior outfielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) followed with an RBI single to center.

The Cardinals scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth on one hit and three WSU miscues.

Wayne State scored the final run in the sixth as Daly had an infield single and McClounie also singled.  Following a fielder's choice and a walk to junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) to load the bases, Messina had an RBI single to left.

William Jewell loaded the bases in the third on two singles and walk, but Guitar did her best Houdini impersonation by getting a strikeout, a pop out to the mound and a ground out to keep the Cardinals scoreless at that point.

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) improved to 3-1 by limiting WJC to four hits and zero earned runs.  She struck out eight and walked two.

Maddie Stonestreet started for the Cardinals and allowed five earned runs in three innings.  She struck out three and walked two, while surrendering seven hits.
