Men's Basketball Wins 90-74 on Senior Day

The Warriors will finish the regular season with three-straight road games.

DETROIT -- With the hopes for a postseason berth still possible, the Wayne State University men's basketball program (7-15 overall, 6-11 GLIAC) improved those odds with a 90-74 win over Purdue Northwest (7-18 overall, 3-14 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon in the final home contest of the season.

The Warriors honored seniors Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan), Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) and Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) prior to the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
An old fashioned three-point play from Wilson tied the game, 5-5, at the 18:20 mark.  The Warriors trailed 9-7, but moments later a triple Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) gave the hosts a 14-12 lead at the 14:27 mark.   Another conventional play, this one from Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) pushed WSU's lead to 17-12 at the 14:01 mark.  The game was tied at 19-19 before a Henderson slam gave the Green & Gold a two-point lead with 11:24 to play.  A fast break alley-oop dunk from Davis to Henderson snapped a 21-21 deadlock at the 8:13 mark.  Owens-White found Wilson for an impressive one-handed dunk, putting the Warriors on top 30-28 with just under four minutes left before halftime.  The Warriors ended the half on an 18-5 run to lead 48-33 at intermission.

PNW scored the first points of the second to cut the Warrior advantage to 13, but a 6-1 WSU run increased the margin to 18 (54-36) at the 17:19 mark.  An offensive rebound and a put back from Murray stretched Wayne State's lead to a then game-high 19 points, 57-38, at the 16:33 mark.  Wayne State led 65-43 with just over 12 minutes left in regulation.  A fast-break layup by Davis gave the Warriors a 71-46 advantage at the 10:15 mark.  Four three-pointers by Purdue Northwest allowed the Pride to cut the deficit to 12, 79-67, with 4:50 left to play.  However, WSU slowed the comeback attempt and two free throws from Murray gave the Warriors a 16-point lead at the 3:16 mark.  The teams each scored six points in the final three minutes as the Wayne State notched the 90-74 triumph.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Davis had a game-high 27 points, while Henderson notched a double with 22 points and a game-best 12 rebounds.  Owens-White contributed 12 points, six steals and five assists, with Murray chipping in with 16 points.

LEADING THE PRIDE
Chandler Spring and Anthony Barnard tied for team-high scoring honors with 17 points each, with Barnard earning a double-double with 10 boards.  Durante Lee also had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Timothy Gilmore added 10 points.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 51 percent (30-of-59) from the floor, compared to 33 percent (22-of-66) for PNW.  WSU was just 3-of-12 (25 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Pride were 9-of-24 (38 percent) from long range.  The Warriors won the battle of the charity stripe making 27-of-34 (79 percent), with Purdue Northwest making 68 percent (21-of-31) of its foul shots.  PNW had a 43-39 edge in rebounding, but the Warriors led 46-22 for points in the paint, 23-12 in points off turnovers and 19-9 in fast-break points.

POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS
With two wins on the weekend, the Warriors moved into a tie-for-ninth with Michigan Tech at 6-11 in conference play.  WSU and MTU trail Grand Valley State by 1.5 games pending the outcome of the Lakers contest at Northwood this evening.  The Timberwolves are in seventh place at 8-8 with three games remaining after tonight's match.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will end the regular season with three-straight road games beginning at Saginaw Valley State on Thursday night.  Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
