Men's Basketball Out-Scored 104-78 at Ferris State

Murray scored a career-high 32 points.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (5-15 overall, 4-11 GLIAC) suffered a 104-78 setback at Ferris State University (17-9 overall, 9-6 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

After a layup by WSU senior Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) on the game's opening possession, the Bulldogs rattled off seven consecutive points.

Back-to-back buckets by junior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) pulled the Warriors within one at 7-6.  The teams traded hoops before Wayne State went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-15 lead on a pair of free throws by junior Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich. / Old Redford Academy) with 11:41 remaining in the opening half.

A Murray dunk ended an 8-0 run by FSU, but Ferris State then went on a 10-1 spurt to open a 14-point advantage (33-19) with just over 5:30 to go before intermission.

WSU had a 13-8 scoring edge, before a last-second basket gave the host Bulldogs a 43-32 lead at halftime.

FSU began the second half on a 24-14 run which concluded on a triple by Markese Mayfield, which gave the Bulldogs a 21-point margin (67-46) at the 12:13 mark.

The teams split the next 28 points, before the Warriors tallied seven straight points to pull within 14 (81-67) at the 7:55 mark.

A jumper by sophomore Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) ended a run of eight consecutive points by Ferris State.

A 15-5 run by FSU pushed the margin to 30 (104-74) with just over two minutes left.

TEAM STATS

Wayne State shot 39 percent (25-of-64) from the floor, while FSU was 37-of-73 (51 percent).  WSU was just 1-of-9 (11 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Bulldogs connected on 52 percent (16-of-31) of their three-point attempts.  The Warriors made 27-of-31 free throw attempts (87 percent), compared to 88 percent (14-of-16) Ferris State.  FSU had a 25-14 advantage in points off turnovers, along with a 42-37 edge in rebounding.  FSU's bench led in scoring by a 42-8 margin.

Murray contributed a career-high 32 points, along with a game-best nine rebounds, while senior Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. University Prep) chipped in with 16 points and seven boards.

LEADING THE BULLDOGS

Cole Walker scored a game-high 35 points, which included 9-of-10 on triples.  Taylor Adway contributed 15 points and Mayfield added 13 points.

UP NEXT

Wayne State returns to the Matthaei for its final two home games of the season.  WSU entertains Parkside at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday (Feb. 14) before hosting Purdue Northwest for Senior Day on Saturday (Feb. 16).  Saturday's festivities also include the WSU Athletic Hall of Fame recognition at halftime.
