Softball Extends Winning Streak To Nine Games With Two Victories on Sunday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 24th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (11-2 overall) won twice on Sunday to extend its winning streak to nine games.  WSU rallied to defeat No. 23-Southern New Hampshire University (6-3 overall) 4-3 in eight innings in the first game, then fell behind 3-1 against Slippery Rock University (1-8 overall) in game two, but responded with eight consecutive runs to win 9-3.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) doubled with two outs and scored on a single down the left field line by junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).

Wayne State extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth after leaving the bases loaded in the third and a runner in scoring position in the fourth.  Senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) and Kressler had back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth, and Turkalj followed with an RBI double down the right field line.  The next two WSU batters popped out preventing any further scoring.

The Penmen went ahead with a three-run bottom of the sixth.  A one-out bloop double down the left field line by Chloe Griffin, was followed by an RBI single from Shay Sauvageau.  Two batters later Jordan Wade hit an 0-1 offering over the left field fence.

In the top of the seventh against SNHU reliever Gabriella Vachon, McClounie smacked the second pitch over the left field fence to knot the game at 3-3.  It was McClounie's first home run since a two-homer game vs. Ashland on April 10, 2018.

In the top of the eighth, junior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) was placed on second as the international tiebreaker rule was instituted.  She advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a two-out single by sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.).

In the bottom of the frame, Vachon was placed on second.  Erin Tyrrell had a bunt single with Vachon being thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.  Tyrrell tried to advance to second during the play at the plate but catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) threw to Kressler covering second to nail Tyrrell.  Sauvageau then lined a 2-2 pitch to short to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) went the distance to improve to 6-1.  She allowed three earned runs on five hits with seven strikeouts to one walk.  Guitar started strong retiring 11 of the first 12 batters and not allowing a hit until two outs in the fourth.

Maddy Barone pitched the first six innings for SNHU.  She surrendered two earned runs on 10 hits with zero walks or strikeouts.  Vachon pitched the final two innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with one strikeout.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as McClounie had a one-out bunt single, then Kressler followed with a single to right moving McClounie to third.  Turkalj plated McClounie with a sacrifice fly.

The Rock scored all three of their runs in the top of the third on two hits and two WSU miscues.

The Warriors did not trail for long as they answered with four runs in the bottom of the third.  Psenicka had a leadoff double and McClounie walked.  After a fielder's choice, Turkalj had a ground-rule double to make it 3-2.  Messina was hit by a pitch to load the bases and with two outs, Clayton drew a four-pitch walk to knot the game at 3-3.  Sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) hit a 2-1 pitch for a ground-rule double to left giving Wayne State a 5-3 lead.

WSU scored four more runs in the fifth.  Turkalj had a leadoff single and Messina walked on five pitches.  Guitar had a bunt single to load the bases.  Pinch-hitter Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) followed with a two-run double to right and Myers smacked another double plating the final two runs.

IN THE CIRCLE
