Women's Tennis Sweeps Scranton, 9-0

The 25th-ranked Warriors edged the Royals at every flight.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 25-Wayne State University women's tennis squad (15-4 overall) blanked Scranton (4-2 overall), 7-0, on Sunday in Orlando.

DOUBLES RESULTS
At No. 1 doubles, freshman Laura Cazacu (London, England) and sophomore Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) won their match, 8-2, against Nastashia DeNunzio and Emily Kelly.

Sophomores Brianna Douglas (Dayton, Ohio / Chaminade Julienne) and Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) were the next to finish, notching an 8-4 victory vs. their No. 3 doubles opponents Elyse Smilnak and Claire Loughlin.

At the second flight, senior Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) and freshman Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) claimed an 8-7 win over Emilia Jakubek and Tatiana Klacko.

SINGLES RESULTS
Douglas was first off the courts at No. 6 singles after Julia Baione retired due to injury (6-0, 1-0).

Cazacu was next off the courts, winning her No. 1 singles match against DeNunzio (6-1, 6-2).

At No. 2 singles, Liong notched a victory over Jakubek (6-2, 6-1).

Jewell swept her No. 3 singles match against Klacko (6-0, 6-0).

Sophomore Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont.) claimed a win in her No. 4 singles match vs. Kelly (6-3, 6-0).

Van Meer was last off the courts, winning her No. 5 singles match in a second-set tiebreaker versus Marissa Campo (6-4, 7-6(3)).

UP NEXT
WSU will travel to seventh-ranked Nova Southeastern for an 11:00 AM match on Monday, March 11.
