Softball Rebounds From Loss, To Win 5-1

Wayne State improves to 15-4.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (15-4 overall) went 1-1 at the NTC Spring Games on Friday.  In a battle of the Warriors in game one, Merrimack (7-9 overall) blanked WSU 2-0.  Wayne State responded with a 5-1 triumph over Millersville (9-10 overall) in game two.

GAME ONE RECAP

Merrimack pitcher Bridget Soraghan (3-2) allowed just two base runners – a walk to senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) with one out in the top of the first, and a leadoff double in the fourth by McClounie.

MC scored once in the fourth on two singles and a sacrifice fly, then scored an insurance run in the fifth on a single, a stolen base and a two-out single.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) suffered the loss despite allowing just two earned runs on eight hits in six innings.  She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Soraghan walked one and did not record a strikeout.

McClounie reached twice – via a walk and a double.

Jennifer Hutnyan had three hits, and nearly had two RBI but both runners were thrown out at the plate.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State had two two-run innings in the first three frames to lead 4-0 and went on to defeat Millersville 5-1.

WSU grabbed a 2-0 advantage just four pitches into the bottom of the first as sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) singled, then McClounie belted a 2-0 offering over the fence.

After the first two batters were retired in the bottom of the third, sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) singled up the middle.  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) then walked on five pitches.  Senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) laced the first pitch she saw into right center for a two-run double.  Junior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) followed with a single but Messina was out at the plate.

WSU had a chance to extend its lead in the fourth as sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) drilled a two-out triple to right center, but the Marauders center fielder made a great running catch on a drive by Psenicka.

Millersville scored an unearned run in the sixth as the leadoff hitter advanced all the way to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Wayne State answered in the bottom of the sixth as Messina had a leadoff single and pinch-runner Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont.) advanced to second on a single by Clayton which came about as the MU centerfielder tried to make a great sliding catch but collided with the left fielder's leg.  Guitar was plunked on the next pitch to load the bases.  Sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) plated MacNeil with a sacrifice fly.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) improved to 6-1 by limiting the Marauders to one unearned run on five hits in the complete game effort.  She struck out a career-high 11 and walked two.

Catherine Johnson (4-3) surrendered five earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.  She struck out one and walked one.

Messina went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while each of the top four in WSU's lineup scored once.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will conclude its spring break trip with a pair of contests on Saturday.  The Warriors will face Caldwell (2-5 overall) at 9:00 a.m., followed by an 11:15 game against Hillsdale (5-12 overall).  WSU is currently 8-2 on spring break after winning seven of its nine contests before spring break.
