Softball Records Two Victories; Concludes Spring Break Trip At 10-2

Warriors begin conference play at home on Wednesday.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 16th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (17-4 overall) concluded its spring break trip on Saturday by winning twice.  WSU defeated Caldwell University (2-7 overall) by a 7-1 score behind a two-hitter from sophomore Presly Buchanan.  In the nightcap against Hillsdale College (5-13 overall), the Warriors prevailed 4-3 in eight innings.  Wayne State recorded a 10-2 mark during the NTC Spring Games.

GAME ONE RECAP

Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) improved to 2-0 by limiting the Cougars to just two hits as only four balls left the infield (F8, F9, 2B and a single up the middle).

WSU scored twice in the bottom of the first after the first two hitters were retired on hard hit balls.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) smashed a single to center that eluded the outfielder allowing Kressler to scamper to third.  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) followed with an RBI single up the middle.  After a wild pitch, senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) plated Turkalj with an RBI single.

Caldwell cut the Warriors lead in half (2-1) as Daniela Solis doubled to lead off the third.  She advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a WSU throwing error.  With the tying run at third and one out, Buchanan recorded back-to-back ground outs to end the threat.

Wayne State broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  With one out, redshirt freshman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) notched her team-leading fourth pinch-hit of the season moving Guitar to third.  Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) laced a two-run triple to right center on a 1-1 offering to make it 4-1.  After a walk to senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.), Kressler singled to center scoring Psenicka.

The Warriors added two more runs in the sixth.  Freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) had a leadoff single and moved to third on a single to right center by Psenicka.  McClounie's smash to third was mishandled allowing Daly to score.  Kressler followed with an RBI single to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Buchanan struck out four and walked one, while allowing just two hits to earn the complete game victory.

Sara Bearden (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings.  She did not record a strikeout or walk a batter.

Jessie Johnston pitched the final 2.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits.  She struck out one and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Kressler also was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

LEADING THE COUGARS

Solis had a double and scored CU's only run.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Chargers scored in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.  Madison Stoner doubled in Jessica Taylor, who had walked with two outs.

WSU answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third.  Psenicka had a one-out single and McClounie walked on a 3-2 pitch.  Kressler followed with an RBI single to right center, then Turkalj had an RBI single to left to put the Warriors in front 2-1.

Hillsdale knotted the game at 2-2 with a leadoff home run in the fourth by Sam Catron, then took a 3-2 advantage in fifth.  After 1-2 barley missed to HC batter Katie Kish, she laced the next pitch for a triple to center.  Amanda Marra followed with an RBI single giving the Chargers a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Psenicka grounded out on a nice play by Emma Johnson.  McClounie walloped the next pitch for a double to center.  Kressler's single to right center advanced McClounie to third, where she scored on a fielder's choice by Turkalj.

Using the international tie-breaker rule in the eighth, Guitar was out trying to go to third on a grounder.  Buchanan singled to left moving pinch-runner Alexis Abruzzo (Sugar Grove, Ill.) to second.  Following a fielder's choice, junior Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) delivered an RBI pinch-hit single to left.

Guitar retired all three Hillsdale batters in the bottom of the eight which was aided by a great running catch by Clayton to record the second out.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (9-3) allowed three earned runs on six hits in eight innings.  She struck out five and walked one.

Dana Weidinger (3-6) was the tough-luck loser allowing four earned runs on 12 hits in eight innings.  She walked two and did not record a strikeout.
