Softball Swept By #8-GVSU

Warriors fall 5-0 and 11-2.

DETROIT -- The 15th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (17-6 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) lost back-to-back games for the first time this season falling 5-0 and 11-2 (in six innings) to No. 8-Grand Valley State University (18-2 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at Gary L Bryce Field.

GAME ONE RECAP

The visiting Lakers scored twice in the top of the second as leadoff batter Nikoma Holmen worked a 10-pitch walk and advanced to third on a double by Brooke Henning.  Following a strikeout, Kelcie LaTour blooped an RBI single to right, and Morgan Wagner's fly to center was caught by a diving Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.), but Henning was able to score on the sacrifice fly.

GVSU's Bailey Thatcher led off the fifth with an infield single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a two-out single by Taylor Rieger to make it 3-0.

Rieger homered down the left field in the top of the seventh with one out and one on to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) went the distance allowing five earned runs on 10 hits.  She struck out five and walked two.

Laker hurler Allison Lipovsky (9-0) retired the first 12 WSU batters before a walk to Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) on a 3-2 pitch leading off the fifth.  She struck out 10 and walked two, while allowing two singles.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Sophomore Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) and senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) each had a hit with Messina also drawing a walk.

LEADING THE LAKERS

Riger went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State scored twice in the bottom of the first as Psenicka reached on an error, senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a bunt single, and Kressler followed with an RBI single.  After a bunt single by Turkalj, McClounie scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Messina.

GVSU scored five times in the top of the second on a two-run home run by LaTour, a two-run double by Lydia Goble and an RBI single from Kaylie Rhynard.

Grand Valley State added an unearned run in the third on two walks, a hit by pitch and a fielding error.

The Lakers added two runs in the fifth on a throwing error, then made it 9-2 on an RBI groundout.  Two more GVSU runs scored on wild pitches in the sixth.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) started the contest and re-entered in the fifth.  In total, she pitched 3.0 innings and surrendered seven earned runs on five hits.  She struck out one and walked four.

Sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four unearned runs.  She walked five and did not record a strikeout.

Freshman Raechel Carroll (Southgate, Mich. / Anderson) made her collegiate pitching debut retiring the lone batter she faced on strikes.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Messina went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

LaTour reached base four times on a home run and three walks.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will host GLIAC rival Northwood University on Sunday for a conference twinbill.  First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
