Softball Sweep Visiting Northwood, 4-1 and 2-1

Turkalj, Myers and McClounie are the offensive stars for WSU.

DETROIT -- The 15th-ranked Wayne State University softball squad (19-6 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) rebounded from a pair of setbacks on Saturday to defeat visiting Northwood University (14-11-1 overall, 4-2 GLIAC) twice on Sunday.  The Warriors won the opener 4-1 with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.  WSU won the nightcap 2-1 in eight innings as senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) blasted a two-out pitch off the right center field fence.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Timberwolves took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Maddie Coulter had a bunt single, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single by Sydni Culps.

Wayne State tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second as junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) worked an eight-pitch walk.  Junior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) advanced Turkalj to second with a sacrifice bunt.  Sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester), after fouling off three two-strike pitches, laced a two-out RBI triple down the right field line.

Both teams had the leadoff batter reach in the third but neither school was able to break the deadlock.  Northwood had another leadoff double in the sixth (this one by Julia Gross, but WSU hurler senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) retired the next three batters.

In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) reached via an error with one out.  Kressler raced all the way to third on a ground out, and Turkalj followed with a RBI single through the left side to make it 2-1.  Adams hit an 0-1 offering through the legs of the NU second baseman to put runners on the corners.  Redshirt freshman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) notched her team leading fifth pinch-hit with an RBI infield single.  Myers drove in the final run with an RBI single through the right side.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (10-4) allowed just one earned run on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out eight and walked one and threw exactly 100 pitches.

Taylor Wright (1-1) tossed her first complete game of the season.  She surrendered four runs (one earned) on eight hits in six innings.  Wright struck out one and walked one.

GAME TWO RECAP

For the second straight contest, Coulter had a leadoff hit in the top of the first and scored.

NU hurler Shayna Frank allowed just one hit through the first five innings on just 37 pitches.

However in the bottom of the sixth, Guitar reached on a fielding error, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.).  Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) followed with a sharp single down the left field line permitting Guitar to only advance to third.  McClounie's sacrifice fly to deep right tied the game at 1-1.

Both teams went 1-2-3 in the seventh inning.

Gross worked a 3-2 walk to lead off the eighth.  On a two-out single to left center by Culps, Gross advanced to third but Culps was nailed trying to go to second on the throw.

In the bottom of the eighth, Adams worked a 3-2 walk with one out.  Daly followed with her first collegiate double advancing Guitar (who re-entered for Adams) to third.  After a pop out, McClounie drilled the first pitch she saw off the right center field fence easily scoring Guitar with the winning run.
