Softball Earns Road Split Ashland With Game Two Victory

Warriors rebound from 4-3 loss for 6-2 triumph.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The 17th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (20-7 overall, 2-3 GLIAC) earned a road split at 28th-ranked Ashland University (18-10 overall, 4-4 GLIAC) Wednesday afternoon.  WSU's seventh inning rally in the opener came up a run short in a 4-3 setback, while a four-run top of the sixth in the nightcap propelled the Warriors to a 6-2 triumph.

GAME ONE RECAP

Eagle pitcher Laney Jones was perfect through six innings, before the Warriors tried to rally with three runs and the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh.

AU took a 1-0 lead as Dayna Denner led off the bottom of the second with a home run to center field.

Ashland extended its advantage to 3-0 the next inning as Camille Pollutro smacked a two-run homer to left field.

The Eagles went ahead 4-0 in the fifth on back-to-back singles and a sacrifice fly by Pollutro.

Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) led off the seventh with a double, and moved to third on a fly out.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had an RBI single and following a fielder's choice, junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) singled bringing the tying run to bat.  Junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) laced a two-run double to right, but the next batter grounded out to end the game.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) took the loss to fall to 10-5.  She allowed four earned runs on six hits in six innings.  Guitar struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Jones (8-4) surrendered three earned runs on four hits.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Adams had a team-high two RBI.

LEADING THE EAGLES

Emma Lawson had two hits, while Pollutro garnered three RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP

Four of WSU's first five batters reached base with the Warrior scoring twice off AU starter Hannah Stroe.  Psenicka led off the contest with a double and senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) followed with a ground-rule RBI double.  After a wild pitch, Kressler plated McClounie with an RBI single.

Ashland loaded the bases in the fourth on a walk, a double and a hit by pitch, but a pop out to the mound ended the threat.

AU was able to knot the score at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth after the first two batters were retired.  A single and a walk was followed by back-to-back RBI singles.

The game did not remain tied for long as the Warrior bats came alive in the sixth producing four runs on six hits.  Turkalj had a leadoff single, and juniro Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) blasted her first career home run (and just her second career extra-base hit).  Stroe then re-entered the circle replacing Jones and promptly allowed a double to Guitar.  Sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) doubled with Guitar advancing to third.  Psenicka had a one-out RBI single to make it 5-2, and with two outs, Kressler had a ground-rule double plating Myers.

The Eagles had a two-out double in the sixth and a one-out single in the seventh.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) went the distance to improve to 8-2.  She allowed two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.  Ameel struck out three and walked two.

Stroe pitched a total of 2.1 innings in her two appearances and surrendered four earned runs on seven hits.  She struck out two and walked one, while allowing five doubles.  Jones hurled 4.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits.  She did not strike out a batter and walked two.
