Women's Basketball Falls 73-50 At Top-Seeded GVSU

Hawkins scores a career-high 25 points.

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The eighth-seeded Wayne State University women's basketball team (13-16 overall) was unable to sustain its early momentum and fell 73-50 at top-seeded Grand Valley State University (27-2 overall) Tuesday evening in a GLIAC Quarterfinal contest.  GVSU entered the contest ranked seventh in the nation this week by the WBCA.

The Warriors raced out to a 9-3 lead in as senior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) scored the game's first field goal.  After a GVSU layup, Hawkins responded with a triple for a 5-3 lead only 67 seconds into the game.  Freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), who entered the contest with the third-most rebounds by a freshman in program history, grabbed an offensive board which led to a bucket by classmate Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.).

Following a defensive rebound by Cherney, junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) connected on a jumper for the 9-3 advantage at the 7:30 mark.  After five straight points by the host Lakers, senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) split a pair from the charity stripe keeping WSU in front 10-8.  A Williams' layup ended a 10-0 spurt by Grand Valley State.  GVSU concluded the quarter with seven consecutive points to end the stanza on a 17-2 run and lead 25-12 after 10 minutes.

After being held scoreless on its first three possessions of the second quarter, Hawkins scored on a layup to make it 27-14.  A pair of free throws by Williams snapped a 7-0 spurt by the Lakers.  A bucket by Hawkins 40 seconds later cut the deficit to 18 (36-18).  Grand Valley State scored eight of the final nine points prior to intermission to lead 44-19 at halftime.

GVSU scored four of the first six points of the second half, before Hawkins made two free throws then drained a triple to make it 48-26.  With just eight seconds remaining in the third quarter, Hawkins made a layup to equal her career-high of 22 points.  Wayne State had a 20-17 scoring advantage in the third period.

Each team scored three points in the first 3:20 of the final stanza, before Hawkins connected from long range to set a new career-high with 25 points.  Grand Valley State tallied nine of the final 14 points for the 73-50 final score.
