Softball Wins Twice On First Day of Spring Break Trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 24th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (9-2 overall) began its spring break trip with a pair of victories on Saturday.  The Warriors defeated Tiffin University (7-7 overall) 5-2 in the opener before upending the University of Findlay (8-9 overall) 7-1 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU took an early 3-0 lead on the Dragons with a trio of runs in the top of the first.  The first run scored when sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) doubled to left field scoring senior third baseman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.), who had tripled on the previous match.  After a single by junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.), senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) and junior first baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had back-to-back RBI singles.

TU scored in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI double by Hayley Kobie.

Wayne State extended its lead in the fifth as sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single and McClounie followed with a bunt single.  The throw to first on Kressler's sacrifice bunt was wild allowing Psenicka to score from second making it 4-1.  Two batters later McClounie scored on Messina's sacrifice fly.

The Dragons tallied their second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth off reliever Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.).  A walk and a double by Abbey Zedaker preceeded an RBI ground out by Jamie Sevenish to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) started for Wayne State and allowed one run on four hits in four innings of work.  She struck out four and walked two.  Ameel earned her second save by limiting Tiffin to one run on one hit and two walks in three innings.

Sarah Klein (4-4) went the distance for Tiffin and allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits.  Klein struck out five and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Kressler went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while McClounie had two hits, including a triple and two runs scored.

LEADING THE DRAGONS

Five different TU batters had one hit apiece.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Warriors scored twice in the bottom of the first and that would be all that Ameel (3-1) would need.  Psenicka ripped the first pitch down the left field line for double.  After a sacrifice bunt with an error, Psenicka scored when Kressler's ground ball was mishandled.  McClounie scored with one out as part of a double steal.

The Oilers scored once in the top of the second on a two-out RBI single by Lauren Linn.

WSU regained its two-run advantage in the bottom of the frame as sophomore shortstop Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) laced a one-out triple to right field.  It was Myers' first hit of the season after starting the year 0-for-27.  Freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) followed with an RBI ground out.

In the third, Kressler smacked Wayne State's first home run of the season belting a 2-1 offering over the left center field fence. The Warriors fifth run scored on an RBI ground out by junior Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.).

Messina had a two-out single in the fifth and Guitar then drilled the first pitch of her at bat over the left field fence for the 7-1 lead.

IN THE CIRCLE

Ameel went the distance allowing the one earned run on eight hits.  She struck out two and walked two.

Caragyn Yanek (0-4) started for Findlay and allowed five runs in two-plus innings.    She struck out one and walked one but surrendered four extra-base hits.

Lyndsey Seamon retired eight in a row before Messina and Guitar accounted for WSU's final two runs.  Carly Brandon pitched the sixth for UF and retired three of the four batters she faced.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka had two doubles and a run scored, while Messina contributed two singles and a run scored.  Kressler and Guitar each had two RBI.

LEADING THE OILERS

Salwa Al-Hajabed had two hits including a double, while Devyn Zuro had two singles.
