DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball team (24-13 overall, 7-9 GLIAC) split its fifth conference doubleheader in the last six twinbill dates on Thursday afternoon. WSU blanked Saginaw Valley State University (15-16 overall, 8-10 GLIAC) 4-0 in the opener, while the Cardinals rallied from a three-run deficit for a 7-4 triumph in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff double into the right-center field gap. Senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) advanced Psenicka to third with a sacrifice bunt, and sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) singled up the middle on the very next pitch.
Wayne State extended its lead in the fourth as senior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) was hit by a 1-1 pitch. Pinch-runner Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.). Junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) plated Clayton with a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fifth, McClounie drilled her team-leading ninth home run of the season over the right field fence to make it 3-0. It was also McClounie's 100th career RBI.
In the bottom of the sixth, Buchanan drew a one-out walk, and with two outs redshirt freshman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) singled through the right side moved pinch-runner Alexis Abruzzo (Sugar Grove, Ill. / Kaneland) to second. Pinch-hitter Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont.) smacked a 2-1 offering up the middle scoring Abruzzo.

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) improved to 14-8 by recording her third shutout of the season. She allowed five hits and struck out two, while not walking a batter.
Mikayla Alexandrou (4-4) suffered the setback after allowing four earned runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked one and did not record a strikeout.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Warriors grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second as Messina had a one-out single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Buchanan. Dodge had an RBI single and went to second on the throw home. Guitar then plated Dodge with an RBI single up the middle.
WSU increased its lead to 3-0 in the third as Psenicka reached on a dropped fly ball and McClounie singled. Both runners moved up on Kressler's sacrifice bunt. Psenicka scored on an RBI ground out by junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).
Saginaw Valley State tied the game at 3-3 with a trio of runs in the fourth. After three straight hits plated one run, a blooper to short resulted in McClounie and the base umpire getting tangled up. McClounie was able to get a glove on the pop up but was unable to hold on allowing SVSU's second run to score. With two outs, the Cardinals had back-to-back singles to knot the score.
A walk and two fielder's choices were followed by an RBI single, a bloop single and a sacrifice fly giving Saginaw Valley a 5-3 lead.
Wayne State pulled within a run (5-4) in the fifth as Psenicka had a leadoff double and scored on a two-out single by Turkalj.
