Softball Blanks Ashland In Both Ends of Saturday's Doubleheader

Warriors win 7-0 and 2-0 against the Eagles.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University softball team improved to 26-13 overall and 9-9 in the GLIAC with a home doubleheader sweep of visiting Ashland University (24-16 overall, 10-10 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at Gary L Bryce Field.  WSU won the opener 7-0, then blanked the Eagles 2-0 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors jumped on AU starter Laney Jones (11-7) for three runs in the bottom of the first.  Senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) laced a one-out double into right center into the teeth of a strong wind.  It was McClounie's 200th career hit.  She advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a ground out by sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.)  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) worked a five-pitch walk, and senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) followed with a single up the middle.  Junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) worked a 3-1 count then drilled a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-0.

Wayne State added to its lead in the second as freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) reached on a catcher's interference, stole second and scored on a two-out single by McClounie.

WSU extended its lead with a three-run fourth.  Sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) reached on a swinging bunt and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Daly walked and sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) singled into left center to load the bases.  McClounie's sacrifice fly made it 5-0 and Kressler clobbered an 0-1 offering over the left fielder's head for a two-run double.

Twice AU had a runner reach third: (1) Camille Pollutro doubled leading off the fourth and went to third on a ground out, but a strikeout and ground out ended that scoring threat; (2) Kylie Asmus had a leadoff double in the sixth and tried to score from second on one-out single but Kressler's on the money throw resulted in her ninth outfield assist of the season.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) improved to 15-8, while tossing her fourth shutout of the season.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter, while scattering seven hits.  Guitar also made a diving catch of a bunt pop up in the first inning and doubled the runner off first.

Jones surrendered seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in six innings of work.  She struck out three and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka and McClounie each had two hits, while Kressler drove in three and McClounie had two RBI, as did Adams.

LEADING THE EAGLES

Asmus and Abigail Butler each had two hits.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Warriors again scored in the first inning as McClounie became the third WSU batter to homer over the center field wall.  She blasted the first pitch she saw for her team-leading 10th round-tripper of the season.

Wayne State added a run in the fifth as Psenicka reached on a bad-hop base hit to second.  McClounie's sacrifice bunt moved Psenicka to second, and after a lineout, Turkalj singled up the middle plating Psenicka with an insurance run.

The Eagles had runners at first and second with two outs in the first, second and sixth innings but did not score.  AU had a one-out single in the third, and a runner at second with one out in the fifth, but a line-drive double play ended that scoring chance.

In addition, Ashland had runners at second and third with no outs in the fourth, but back-to-back ground outs and a fly out kept AU off the scoreboard.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) earned her second solo shutout of the season by scattering seven hits.  She struck out two and walked one to improve to 9-5.

Hannah Stroe (11-9) surrendered two earned runs on 10 hits in six innings.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Seven different WSU batters had hits as Kressler, Turkalj and Messina each had two singles.

LEADING THE EAGLES

Emma Lawson had three singles, while Pollutro added two singles.

WARRIOR NOTES

McClounie played and started her 200th career game in the first contest against Ashland.  She also extended her hitting streak to 13 games with a single and a double in the opener, and a home run in game two.

Head coach Gary Bryce increased his all-time win total to 1,299, which ranks seventh in the history of the NCAA (all three divisions combined).

Donations were taken during the doubleheader in support of "A Mother's Wish", a local charity that supports women and families impacted by breast cancer by easing the day to day burdens associated with a diagnosis, while offering opportunities for hope, comfort, family togetherness and healing.  A total of $240 was donated.
