Softball Swept By No. 6-Grand Valley State

Warriors fall 3-0 and 5-2.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Wayne State University softball team (26-15 overall, 9-11 GLIAC) was swept by sixth-ranked Grand Valley State University (31-7 overall, 15-5 GLIAC) in a conference doubleheader played on Tuesday at Cornerstone University.  GVSU won the opener 3-0, then the Lakers claimed a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors were no-hit for 6 and 2/3 innings before junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs) singled to right field.

WSU's only other base runner was a one-out single in the top of the first to senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.).

In between, GVSU hurler Allison Lipovsky retired 19 Wayne State hitters in a row.

Laker Joanna Cirrincione had a one-out single in the fifth and scored on a two-out home run by Taylor Rieger.  Lydia Goble then hit a solo shot two pitches later for the only scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-lexington) fell to 15-9 on the season after allowing three earned runs on six hits in six innings.  She struck out eight and walked one.

Lipovsky (18-2) struck out seven and walked one, while facing 23 batters.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Turkalj had the lone WSU hit.

LEADING THE LAKERS

Cirrincione had two of GVSU's six hits.

GAME TWO RECAP

WSU had a chance to grab a 1-0 lead in the first as sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff double and moved to third on a fly out, but the next two batters were retired.

The Warriors did take the early advantage in the second as redshirt freshman third baseman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a two-out double and scored when junior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) doubled after fouling off a pair of two-strike pitches.

GVSU knotted the score at 1-1 in the second on a leadoff double by Nikoma Holmen and an RBI single by Brooke Henning.

The Lakers went ahead in the third as Kaylie Rhynard had a leadoff single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Goble.

Grand Valley State extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth by scoring three runs on three hits, plus a Warrior error.

Wayne State tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh as Dodge had a leadoff single, and Guitar's one-out single put runners on the corners.  Psenicka had an RBI single and McClounie walked to load the bases with one out, but the next two batters were retired.
