Softball Sweeps Visiting Purdue Northwest, 3-2 and 3-0

Ameel nearly tosses no-hitter.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University softball team (29-18 overall, 12-14 GLIAC) swept visiting Purdue University Northwest (22-18 overall, 13-13 GLIAC) on Tuesday afternoon at Gary L Bryce Field.  After having a 2-0 lead evaporate in the top of the seventh in the opener forcing the Warriors to 3-2 in nine innings, freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) nearly tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap allowing a two-out single in the seventh.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU scored twice in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-0 lead.  Senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a leadoff single in the hole at short.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) followed with a bunt single and McClounie advanced all the way to an uncovered third base.  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had an RBI single off the pitcher to score the game's first run.  Following a sacrifice bunt by senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.), Kressler scored as a line drive off the bat by junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) was dropped at shortstop.

The Warriors had a chance to extend their lead in the fourth, but Turkalj was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single by sophomore infielder Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester).

Ten straight Pride batters had been retired prior to Taylor Mendenhall leading off the seventh with a double.  After a fly out and pop out, PNW's Emma Hendricks took a very close 2-2 pitch, then hit the next delivery over the left field fence to tie the game at 2-2.

Neither team scored in the eighth.  PNW's Zoee Anderson had an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error with no outs.  A ground out and a fly out with Anderson advancing to third preceded Mendenhall being ruled out for not being re-entered after two pitches in the batter's box.

The Pride had back-to-back one-out singles in the ninth, but a strikeout and fly out ended that threat.

In the bottom of the ninth, McClounie ripped a one-out pitch through the left side for a single.  She advanced to second on a ground out and to third on a wild pitch.  Turkalj then laced a 3-1 offering up the middle for WSU's second walk-off win off the season (the other was a 2-1 triumph over Northwood in eight innings).

IN THE CIRCLE

Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) earned her 16th win (16-11) by limiting PNW to two earned runs on eight hits in nine innings.  She struck out eight and walked one.  Guitar's strikeout to end the fifth was the 400th of her collegiate career.  She becomes the eight pitcher in WSU history to reach the 400 strikeout plateau.

Ashley Bravo (3-3) surrendered three earned runs on 12 hits in 8.2 innings.  She did not record a strikeout, and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Five different WSU batters had a multiple-hit game.  McClounie went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kressler, Turkalj, Myers and sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) each had two hits.  Junior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) also reached twice on a hit and a walk.

LEADING THE PRIDE

Hendricks went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

GAME TWO RECAP

Ameel came within one strikeout of a no-hitter as she retired the first 12 Purdue Northwest batters before plunking the leadoff batter in the top of the fifth.  She then set down the next eight Pride hitters until Madison Schultz hit a 1-2 offering into right center.

Wayne State scored twice in the bottom of the third.  After back-to-back lineouts by Clayton and Psenicka, McClounie ripped a double over the left fielder's head.  Kressler followed with an RBI single through the right side.  Turkalj then worked a walk and Messine plated Kressler with an RBI single to left center.

The Warriors added to their advantage in the fifth.  McClounie reached on a fielding error and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kressler.  Turkalj delivered again with an RBI single to left.

IN THE CIRCLE

Ameel (11-7) threw just 89 pitches to toss the one-hit shutout.  She struck out six and hit one batter.

Courtney Blackwell (11-6) allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits in six innings.  She struck out two and walked two.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Messina went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while McClounie had two hits and two runs scored.

LEADING THE PRIDE

Schultz had the lone hit and was also hit by a pitch.
