Softball Splits At Home Against Wisconsin-Parkside

Guitar tosses five inning no-hitter in game one.

Detroit – The Wayne State University softball team (30-19 overall, 13-15 GLIAC) split a home GLIAC doubleheader on Friday against the visiting University of Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers (8-42 overall, 5-23 GLIAC).  WSU won the opener 8-0 in five innings behind a near perfect game from senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington), while the Warriors stranded 10 runners in falling 8-2 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU took a 1-0 lead just three pitches into the bottom of the first as senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) smacked her team-leading 13th home run of the season.

Wayne State extended its lead with a six-run second inning.  After junior outfielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) reached on an error, classmate Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had an infield single.  Guitar plated Clayton with a single to right center after falling behind 0-2 in the count, and sophomore infielder Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) followed with an RBI infield single.  After a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt loaded the bases, a wild pitch made it 4-0.  A ground out produced another run, before senior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) doubled in the final run of the frame.

In the bottom of the fourth, McClounie singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third as the ball was misplayed in the outfield.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had an RBI single to left center on a 1-0 offering to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (17-11) struck out eight consecutive Ranger batters after the game's first hitter.  The only runner to reach was Cassie Walek, who walked on an eight-pitch at bat in the fourth after it started raining.  Guitar finished with nine strikeouts to one walk, while tossing her first collegiate no-hitter.

Alyssa McClelland (4-6) surrendered eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits in four innings.  She walked two and did not record a strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

McClounie, junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) and Guitar each had two hits as eight different WSU batters had hits.

LEADING THE RANGERS

Walek reached base on a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State almost took an early lead in the bottom of the first but McClounie was ruled out at the plate as she was trying to score from first on Kressler's double.

The Warriors did grab a 1-0 advantage in the second as Messina had a leadoff single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt freshman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.).  A single by Guitar put runners on the corners.  After a pop out, back-to-back walks to freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) and sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) scored Messina.

The Rangers struck for three runs in the fourth inning on four hits among the first five batters, with three of the hits being doubles.

UWP extended its lead in the fifth on a three-run home run by Jessica Crull with two outs.

WSU earned one run back in the bottom of the fifth as McClounie had an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on Kressler's single which preceded a sacrifice fly by Turkalj.

Jessica Miklos hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to complete the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) suffered the loss to fall to 11-8.  She allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings.  Ameel struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Guitar pitched the final 2.2 innings and was tagged for three runs on six hits.  She struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Kiley Akey (2-7) scattered 10 hits in allowing just two earned run.  She walked two and did not record a strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

McClounie, Kressler and Messina each had two hits.

LEADING THE RANGERS

The top four batters in the lineup – Kellie Fenza, Walek, Adrien Hall and Crull - each had two hits.
