Softball Splits On Senior Day

DETROIT – The Wayne State University softball squad (31-20 overall, 14-16 GLIAC) split a home doubleheader on Senior Day against the visiting Davenport University Panthers (30-19 overall, 22-10 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.  WSU won the opener 1-0 as senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) tossed a shutout and smacked a solo home run.  DU won the nightcap 4-2 with two runs in the top of the seventh.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors won the first game of Senior Day as Guitar tossed a three-hit shutout.  She struck out three and walked three, while hitting two batters.

Guitar also accounted for the lone run of the game as she drilled an 0-1 offering leading off the bottom of the second.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar improved to 18-11 with the win, her sixth shutout of the season.

Mallory Teunissen (16-7) allowed just one earned run on five hits but took the loss.  She struck out two and walked one.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Five different Warriors had a hit in the game, with the lone extra-base hit being Guitar's home run.

LEADING THE PANTHERS

Mariah Cura had two singles.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 advantage.  Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single off the pitchers leg, and senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) followed with a bunt single after Psenicka had moved to second on an errant pickoff attempt.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) fielder's choice plated Psenicka.

DU tied the game in the second on a walk, a stolen base and an RBI single by Alexis Koza.

The Panthers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth as the leadoff batter reached on a two-base error, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a WSU throwing error.

The Warriors tied the game at 2-2 in fifth as sophomore infielder Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) reached on an error, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) and scored on a two-out single by Kressler.

In the top of the seventh, Davenport had a one-out single and a two-out RBI double by Kennedy Crawford for a 3-2 lead.  The next batter singled up the middle with Kressler's throw unequivocally beating the runner, who was ruled safe on obstruction.

IN THE CIRCLE

Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and suffered the loss to fall to 11-9.  She struck out eight and walked one.

Taylor Simon (6-3) allowed two unearned runs on four hits.  She walked two and did not record a strikeout.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Psenicka had two of WSU's four hits.

LEADING THE PANTHERS

Abby Merice, Rachel Griffin and Urban each had two hits.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will conclude the regular-season with a GLIAC doubleheader at Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, April 28.

WSU NOTES

The Warriors have won at least 30 games for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons.

Wayne State has qualified for the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, marking the 34th appearance in the 35-year history of the league playoffs.  Last season (2018) when WSU did not qualify ended a 33-year post-season run since the GLIAC Tournament began in 1985.

After going 36 years without a losing record during GLIAC regular-season play until last season's 9-19 conference mark, the Warriors will have to win both games on Sunday at SVSU to  avoid a second consecutive year below .500 in league play.
