Softball Concludes Regular-Season With Split at SVSU

McClounie sets single-season home run record.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University softball (32-21 overall, 15-17 GLIAC) concluded its 2019 regular-season campaign with a split at Saginaw Valley State University (26-22 overall, 16-16 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  WSU won the opener 7-2, before the Cardinals took the nightcap, 9-4.

GAME ONE RECAP

The Warriors exploded for five runs in the top of the first.  Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) then broke the single-season home run record with a two-run blast.  After a pop out, junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had a single to center before senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) was hit by a pitch.  Senior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) then hit a three-run shot to make it 5-0.  It was Guitar's second home run in as many days.

Wayne State extended its lead in the second as McClounie drew a two-out walk and advanced to third on a single down the right field line by sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).  Turkalj followed with an RBI single up the middle.

WSU went ahead 7-0 in the top of the fourth as Kressler smacked a two-out solo home run.

The Cardinals cut into the Warrior advantage in the bottom of the fourth as Aubree Mouthaan hit a two-run home run.

Neither team was able to score in the last three innings.

Guitar allowed two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.  She struck out nine and walked two to improve to 19-11 on the season.

GAME TWO RECAP

SVSU scored four times in the bottom of the first on two singles, a hit by pitch and a three-run triple after a fielder's choice had produced the game's first run.

Wayne State pulled within a run in the top of the third by scoring three times.  Psenicka and McClounie had back-to-back one-out doubles to make it 4-1.  After a fly out, Turkalj walloped a two-run home run, her first four-bagger of the season.

The Cardinals answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on back-to-back one-out home runs by Mouthaan and Shelby Misiak.

After a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth made it 7-3, WSU scored once in the top of the fifth.  Freshman outfielder Monica Daly (Ancaster, Ont.) had a leadoff single and went to second on a ground out, and scored on a single by McClounie.

Saginaw Valley State completed the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth on three hits.
