Softball Wins GLIAC Tournament Opener, 2-0, over Ashland

Guitar tosses shutout; Adams delivers two-run single in seventh.

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Wayne State University softball team (33-21 overall) recorded a 2-0 win over Ashland University (33-22 overall) in an opening round contest of the 2019 GLIAC Tournament being held at Sports Force Parks.  It was WSU's fourth win in five games against AU this season.

The sixth-seeded Warriors were no-hit through six innings by Eagles ace Laney Jones as WSU had just three base runners until the seventh:  a
one-out walk to senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) in the first; 2) a one-out walk to senior pitcher Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) in the second; 3) and a leadoff hit by pitch of sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) in the fourth.

Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) began the seventh by reaching on a fielding error.  Senior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) advanced Turkalj to second with a sacrifice bunt.  Guitar followed with a single to right and went to second on the throw.  After a fly out, junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) delivered a two-run single to right center.

Ashland had a chance to break the scoreless tie in the second with a runner at second with one out, who was at third with two outs, but Guitar induced an inning ending ground out.

The Eagles had a leadoff double in the third, but Guitar retired the next three batters.  In the fourth, AU had a leadoff single but once again Guitar retired the next three hitters.

After a leadoff single by Ashland's Abigail Butler in the fifth and a sacrifice bunt, Erika Farst singled to center, but Kressler notched another outfield assist by nailing Butler at the plate.

A similar scenario in the sixth with a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt and a walk, had two runners on with one out.  A line out and a pop out, both to McClounie to end the frame.

Just to keep the game interesting, the Eagles had two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but pinch-runner Alli Hylton was thrown out at third trying to go first to third on an infield single.

IN THE CIRCLE
