Softball Drops Twinbill at Purdue Northwest

Warriors let 7-2 lead slip way in 8-7 game one setback; then blanked 7-0 in game two.

HAMMOND, Ind. – The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (22-11 overall, 5-7 GLIAC) dropped a pair of GLIAC road contests on Saturday at Purdue University Northwest (16-10 overall, 7-5 GLIAC).  WSU let a 7-2 advantage slip away in falling 8-7 in the opener.  The host Pride blanked the Warriors 7-0 in the nightcap.
 
GAME ONE RECAP
 
Purdue Northwest scored twice in the bottom of the second on a solo home run by Tessa Steffens and a two-out RBI double by Amanda Noblett.
 
Wayne State went ahead 3-2 in the top of the third as sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) had a leadoff single, and after a stolen base by Buchanan, and infield single by sophomore Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) put runners on the corners.  Senior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) belted a 1-1 offering over the right-center field fence for her team leading fifth home run of the campaign.
 
WSU extended its lead to 7-2 with a four-run fifth.  Psenicka had a one-out double and McClounie was hit by the first pitch.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) clobbered a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field fence for her second round tripper of the season.  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) doubled on the next pitch and scored on a single by junior Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.).
 
The Pride had two two-run singles in the bottom of the fifth.  The first run-scoring hit came on the pitch after Warrior hurler Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) narrowly missed a strike three call.
 
PNW tied the game in the sixth on a two-out hit by pitch, a WSU throwing error and an RBI single.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Kotzo had a leadoff double and scored on a two-out double by Heather O'Kelly.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
 
Guitar surrendered seven earned runs on 14 hits in 5.2 innings.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.  Freshman Paige Ameel (Marysville, Mich.) took the loss to fall to 8-3 after allowing one earned run on two hits in one inning of work.  She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
 
Mia Stevens started for the Pride and allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings.  She struck out three and walked one.  Courtney Blackwell (7-3) earned the win in relief.  She pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.
 
LEADING THE WARRIORS
 
Psenicka went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kressler, Turkalj, Adams and Buchanan each had two hits.
 
LEADING THE PRIDE
 
Steffens had three hits and three RBI, while Stevens went 3-for-3 with two RBI.
 
GAME TWO RECAP
 
Wayne State managed just two base runners as Blackwell only faced 23 batters.
 
The Pride scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings before tacking on four insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
 
Ameel (8-4) allowed three earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings with three strikeouts to zero walks.  Buchanan retired just one of the five batters she faced surrendering four earned runs on two hits, a walk and a hit by pitch.
 
Blackwell (8-3) retired the final 15 WSU batters after redshirt freshman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) had a leadoff double in the third.

McClounie had a single in addition to Dodge's double.

Zoee Anderson went 3-for-4 with a run scored.
 
UP NEXT
 
Wayne State will play a GLIAC doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday.  The start of the first game has been pushed back to 1 p.m. Central time.
