Softball Splits Another GLIAC Doubleheader

Warriors win 8-0 in the opener but fall 3-2 in the nightcap.

KENOSHA, Wis. – The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (23-12 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) split a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside (1-33 overall, 1-15 GLIAC) on Sunday afternoon.  The Warriors ended a season-long three-game losing skein with an 8-0 triumph in five innings in the opener.  The Rangers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap to prevail 3-2.

GAME ONE RECAP

Just nine pitches into the contest, Wayne State led 1-0 after senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a one-out bunt single and scored on an RBI double by sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).  After a ground out, senior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) doubled to score Kressler.

In the top of the third, McClounie smacked the first pitch of the inning over the left-centerfield wall and Kressler did the same on a 3-1 offering to make it 4-0.  Junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) singled, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a ground out.  Redshirt freshman Emily Dodge (Burlington, Ont.) singled in Turkalj, while sophomore Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) doubled down the right field line scoring Dodge from first to make it 6-0.

The offense continued in the fourth as sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff double and scored on McClounie's second round-tripper of the game.  The last Warrior with two home runs in a game was McClounie on March 11, 2018, vs. Jefferson.

Dodge and Buchanan had back-to-back singles to the fifth, but the next three batters were retired.
