Women's Tennis Advances in NCAA Midwest Regional

The No. 2-seeded Warriors won 4-1 vs. No. 7-seeded Walsh.

CLINTON TWP., Mich. -- The second-seeded Wayne State University women's tennis squad (20-5 overall) will advance to round two of the 2019 NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament after winning 4-1 vs. seventh-seeded Walsh (16-9 overall) on Monday afternoon at the Peachtree Tennis Club.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Freshman Laura Cazacu (London, England) and sophomore Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) were first off the courts, notching a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles against Maria Kacalova and Katharina Razum.

Senior Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) and sophomore Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont.) were next to finish, dropping their No. 3 doubles match 6-4 to Clara Drasch and Parvanee Karimpour.


At No. 1 doubles, senior Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) fell in a tiebreaker (7-6(4)) vs. Mercedes Fernandez and Nicole Beidacki.

SINGLES RESULTS
Freshman Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) was first off the courts after notching a victory over Sofia Khairutdinova at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-1).

Cazacu was next to finish, winning her No. 2 singles match versus Kacalova (6-1, 6-3).

At No. 4 singles, Da-Silva tallied a win against Drasch (6-1, 6-2).

Liong clinched the win for the Green and Gold at No. 3 singles vs. Beidacki (6-2, 6-2).


Kuznetsova and 
sophomore Tanja Skalda (Prien Am Chiemsee, Germany) both had unfinished matches.  Kuznetsova fell 6-4 in her first set at No. 1 singles against Fernandez, but was up 4-2 in her second set.  At No. 5 singles, Skalda won her first set 6-1, but was down 5-4 vs. Razum.

UP NEXT

Second-seeded WSU will play third-seeded Grand Valley State on Tuesday (1:00 p.m.) at the Wayne State Tennis Courts.
