Softball Edged 3-2 By Davenport In Winner's Bracket Semifinal Contest

Clayton goes 3-for-3.

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Wayne State University softball team (33-22 overall) suffered a 3-2 setback against second-seeded Davenport University (32-19 overall) in a winner's bracket semifinal contest on Friday evening.  The 2019 GLIAC Tournament is being held at Sports Force Parks.
 
The sixth-seeded Warriors took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first vs. the Panthers.  After the first two batters were retired, sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) doubled down the left field line and scored on an infield single by junior Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).  Senior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) followed with an infield single with Turkalj scoring on a single through the left side by senior pitcher Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).
 
WSU had at least one base runner in four of the final six innings, including two runners in both the second and fifth innings, but was unable to score.
 
DU scored once in the first on two singles following a hit by pitch.
 
Davenport scored the eventual game-winning run on a two-out, two-run single by Alexis Koza in the bottom of the third.
 
IN THE CIRCLE
 
Guitar (20-12) took the loss after allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six innings.  She struck out four and walked three.
 
Taylor Simon earned the victory to improve to 7-3.  She allowed two earned runs on 10 hits with zero strikeouts and zero walks.
 
LEADING THE WARRIORS
 
Junior right fielder Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) went 3-for-3, while seven other WSU batters had one hit apiece.
 
LEADING THE PANTHERS
 
Abby Merice and Mariah Cura each had two hits.
 
UP NEXT
 
Wayne State will play fourth-seeded Northwood in a loser's bracket elimination game on Saturday at 10 a.m.
