Softball Upended 3-1 By Northwood in Loser's Bracket Contest

WSU will await NCAA Tournament selections on Monday.

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The Wayne State University softball team (33-23 overall), seeded sixth for the GLIAC Tournament, fell 3-1 to fourth-seeded Northwood University (29-25 overall) Saturday morning in a GLIAC elimination game at Sports Force Parks.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead just three batters into the game.  Sophomore second baseman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) led off the contest with a single up the middle, and senior infielder Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) followed with a sacrifice bunt.  Sophomore center fielder Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) then had an RBI double to left center.  Kressler advanced to third on a wild pitch but the next two WSU batters were retired.

Psenicka singled and McClounie walked to start the third inning, but the next three batters made outs preventing WSU from extending its lead.

The Timberwolves tied the game in the bottom of the third on three singles, including back-to-back two-out base hits.

NU manufactured the go-ahead run in the fifth as Grace Dutoi reached on a one-out Wayne State miscue.  Pinch-runner Taylor Schmitt stole second and scored on an RBI single by Sydni Culps.

Northwood went ahead 3-1 in the sixth as Dutoi smacked a two-out RBI double down the left field line.
