Miscues Lead To 35-12 Setback For Football

Roberson had a 106 all-purpose yards.

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Wayne State University football team (0-2 overall) suffered a 35-12 setback at Truman State University (2-0 overall) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a three-and-out by the Warriors on their opening drive, WSU was whistled for kick catch interference, a 15-yard penalty, giving the Bulldogs a first-and-10 at the Wayne State 37.  A 31-yard completion on second down from Jaden Barr to Jordan Salima on a screen pass led to a 28-yard field goal by Josh Scheiderer.

After four consecutive punts (two by each squad), a fourth-down pass from midfield by the Warriors was broken up.

The Bulldogs took advantage of the field position and drove 50 yards in nine plays as Barr tossed a nine-yard scoring strike to Spencer Newell on third-and-seven.

On the ensuing kickoff, WSU's Kyle Lewis (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) had a 21-yard return but was stripped with TSU's Jordan Siegel returning the fumble 28 yards for a score and a 17-0 lead by the hosts.

On WSU's first play from scrimmage, an ineligible downfield penalty negated a first-down reception.  Wayne State was forced to punt, and the Bulldogs went 46 yards in two plays – a 20-yard reverse by Lawrence Woods, followed by a 26-yard touchdown catch by Newell.

A Warrior fumble on the first play from scrimmage following the kickoff led to a 19-yard field goal by Scheiderer.

Wayne State was limited to 65 yards (47 rushing, 18 passing) of total offense in the first 30 minutes, while Truman accumulated 169 yards (27 rushing and 142 passing).

Truman took the second half kickoff and drove 64 yards before a missed field goal.

On WSU's first play from scrimmage, senior Dakota Kupp (Waterford, Mich. / Mott) was intercepted, and after an unsportsmanlike penalty on WSU, the Bulldogs converted a three-play nine-yard touchdown drive.  The PAT kick was blocked, however, a Truman player picked up the ball and rumbled in from six yards out for two points.

TSU had to punt on its next possession, with senior Darece Roberson, Jr. (Muskegon, Mich. / Mona Shores) recording a 24-yard return to the Truman 40-yard line.  Kupp led the Warriors to the red zone, and senior James Hill (Livonia, Mich. / Clarenceville) scored on a three-yard run to prevent a shutout.

After another Bulldog punt, the Warriors drove 92 yards in nearly four minutes with sophomore King Sanders (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Woodridge) scoring on a four-yard jaunt to complete the scoring.
